Our social media accounts are practically our world. From where we are and what we are doing, to our personal information, everything is stored on our social media accounts for convenience. Let’s take Instagram for instance, it stores all our personal information and if it gets into the hands of the wrong people, it could turn into a disaster. Yes, I am talking about Instagram scams. With scams of both small and large scale happening on the social media platform left, right, and centre. 

At this time, keeping our social media secure is very necessary. With the advanced technology, hacks and scams have evolved too. According to the US Federal Trade Commission, social media is like a gold mine for scammers. They have started using artificial intelligence for their cybercrime and social media platforms like Instagram are their primary target. Often, we are too late to act and cannot do anything. But as wise old men have said, “prevention is better than cure.”

Make a Strong Password for your Instagram account

We put the least effort into creating our passwords, and that is our biggest mistake. Firstly, keep updating your password from time to time. And please don’t use easy-to-guess information like your birthday as your password. A strong password should have a mix of upper and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols. 

Turn on Two-Factor Authentication (2FA):

Firstly, for those who don’t know, Two-Factor authentication is a crucial step that all social media users should take care of but unfortunately, people don’t even know about it and scammers make use of this.

So, two-factor authentication is an extra layer of security for your Instagram account. In simple words, it is like putting two locks on the door to your Instagram account. Usually, it is a text or code from an authentication app or a message sent to your mobile number. 

Here’s how you can set up two-factor authentication on your Instagram account.

Step 1: Go to your profile page and tap on the three lines in the top right corner of the page. 

Step 2: Go to “Settings” and then click on “Security”. Choose  then select “Accounts Centre”, then go to  ” Password and Security,” and then click on “Two-Factor Authentication.”

Step 3: Select the account on which you want to set up Two-Factor Authentication and follow the instructions that pop up on the screen.

Check Apps that use your Instagram Account

Certain third-party apps function to use your Instagram account to log in. Sometimes, you might not remember using your Instagram account to log in to these apps or websites. And if you mistakenly give your details to a fishy app then you could get scammed. So, make sure to check which other apps use your Instagram by going to the Settings page and removing any apps or websites that you don’t trust or use any longer.

Secure Your Email ID

We made our email IDs so long ago that we mostly have forgotten to secure them too. Mostly all our social media accounts are linked to our email ID and it is important that we properly
As I mentioned earlier, use a strong password for your email ID and turn on Two-Factor Authentication for it too. Now, this is important because if someone accesses your mail, then they can access your Instagram account too.
