How to delete or deactivate your Instagram account: Step-by-step guide

Instagram is  the most popular and widely used among social media platforms. The Meta owned social media platform now allows users to escape reality with fun content, but it can also cause a scrolling addiction. This may have forced you to consider disconnecting from Instagram and focussing on reality at times. So, if you want to deactivate your Instagram accounts to take a break from the platform, follow the steps below.

But if you have made up your mind and want to exit Instagram by completely deleting your account with all your data, you can do that too. Here’s how:

How to permanently delete your account from Account Centre (Android)

  • Step 1: Open the Instagram app on your Android device or iOS device.
  • Step 2: Click on your profile picture showing at the bottom right and tap to your profile.
  • Step 3: Tap Menu in the top right.
  • Step 4: Click on the Accounts Centre, then tap Personal details.
  • Step 5: Account ownership and control, then tap Deactivation or deletion.
  • Step 6: The account that you’d like to permanently delete.
  • Step 7: Tap Delete account, then tap Continue.

How to permanently delete your account from Account Centre (Computer)

  • Step 1: Open the Instagram app website on your computer web.
  • Step 2: login into your Instagram account.
  • Step 3: Tap on the three horizontal lines in the bottom left and then click on the settings
  • Step 4: Click on the Accounts Centre, then tap Personal details.
  • Step 5: Account ownership and control, then tap Deactivation or deletion.
  • Step 6: The account that you’d like to permanently delete.
  • Step 7: Tap Delete account, then tap Continue.

How much time does it take to delete your Instagram account?

It may take up to 90 days to completely delete your Instagram account. If your account has been deleted, you can sign up again with the same username or transfer it to another account as long as it has not been taken by a new Instagram user. Notably, after 30 days from your account deletion request, your account and all of your information will be permanently deleted.
