For some time now, Google has been under legal scrutiny for holding a monopoly. Things have gotten to an extent where talks about breaking up Google are also surfacing now. Amidst all this tension, Google CEO Sunder Pichai recently held an earnings call to address these concerns. During the call, Pichai said that the company was committed to innovation and hopeful that they would find a way around the recent antitrust rulings.
Pichai even addressed questions of worried stakeholders. Addressing one such question about the potential impact of losing search engine contracts, including one with Apple and the options that have been given to Google by the Department of Justice (DOJ), Pichai said that he had confidence in Google’s legal strategy. He said that the company plans to “vigorously defend” itself. He further went ahead and cautioned that if Google were to accept some of the DOJs proposals then it could have unintended consequences for both the tech industry and American leadership in the sector.
During the earnings call, he said, “First of all, we plan to vigorously defend these cases. And some of the early proposals from the DOJ, et cetera, have been far-reaching.” He emphasised how these measures could disrupt the dynamic nature of tech innovation in the U.S., a couple of times.
Although Pichai did not share the company’s next plan of action, he said that Google still remains the top choice for consumers and partners. He additionally spoke about Google’s ongoing commitment to making its products more accessible and innovative. He even attributed the company’s success to its quality and consumer choice rather than any unfair practices that it is being judged upon.
He said, “People have chosen us because they view it as the best product, be it consumers or partners.” He further added, “We have a long track record of working hard to make our products as accessible as possible across all platforms.”
