What Google should do to revive Google Glass

Google's ambitious Google Glass project is set for a major redesign. Will the next version be better and more popular than the last one? What Google should do to ensure Glass doesn't join its list of failed products such as Buzz and Wave.

Google isn't done with its ambitious Glass project as yet. According to reports, the company plans to revive the Glass by giving a complete redesign “from scratch and not release it until it is complete”.

Google Glass could not take off due to multiple reasons. Launched in 2012, the wearable was available to select group of people as part of its Explorer program. Earlier this year, Google announced ending the beta period of the Explorer program.

“Early Glass efforts have broken ground and allowed us to learn what’s important to consumers and enterprises alike,” says Tony Fadell, who oversees Google’s smart-eyewear division along with Ivy Ross. “I am excited to be working with Ivy to provide direction and support as she leads the team and we work together to integrate those learnings into future products."

One of the main reasons why the Google glass failed is the lack of utility. In spite of sporadic adoption in a few sectors, the glass failed to prove its value in real life. Also, Google made the product available to the public way early instead of completing the product in its Labs. The strategy to make it available through Explorer program also backfired.

Even though Google Glass didn't live up to the expectations, the product however showed that wearables have a huge potential. It may be recalled the likes of Sony and Lenovo have already revealed Google Glass competitors. Smart glasses may have not clicked as yet, but they are likely to make a big entry in the near future. Google Glass should definitely make a comeback, and here's what Google should focus on the next version of the Glass:

Style

Google Glass lacked in style quotient. The big and perhaps nerdy Glass should look much cooler, somewhat how the smart watches have evolved in past few months.

Focus on software

Google should focus on the software part like it does in the case of phones and tablets. Along with strengthening the core of the software, Google should let third parties, perhaps, the likes of Sony, HTC and LG make the hardware.

App ecosystem

Google had hoped developers will rush to the Glass platform. But, the number of apps remained limited on the platform. This must change with the new Google Glass. An app ecosystem, consistent with other platforms, along with focus on enterprise apps will encourage developers.

Application

Instead of trying to develop a device that can do all, Google should identify the key sectors where its Glass with limited functions can have the optimum usage. Keeping price (affordability) in mind, it should experiment in the areas such as medical science, education and mass communication.

Address privacy concerns

One of the main criticisms Google Glass faced were regarding privacy invasion. According to privacy advocates, such smart glasses could abuse facial recognition technology and even store/broadcast private conversations. The next version should definitely address these privacy concerns.
