A TV is not a short-term investment. Customers generally use a TV for 5 to 7 years. It's safe to say that getting the right size is of utmost importance as TVs today are a window into different worlds of entertainment. TVs today range from a modest 32-inches all the way up to 85-inches and it can get confusing as to which is the right screen size for you. With different sizes, there is also another point to consider- resolution. While smaller screen sizes offer an HD and FHD resolution, some like 43-inch TVs are available in FHD and 4K. At the other end of the spectrum, we have large screen TVs in 4K and quite a few offering 8K resolution. So, let's break down which TV size is right for you.
The most important thing to know is the viewing distance between you and the TV. Sit too close to the TV and the experience can get a little overwhelming. Sit too far, and you miss out on the cinematic experience. There is a sweet spot at which you should be seated to get the perfect viewing experience. There is a simple way to figure out the minimum viewing distance for a particular screen size – divide the size of the TV by 10. The minimum viewing distance for a 43-inch TV is about 4.3 feet, for a 55-inch TV is 5.5 feet, for a 65-inch, it's 6.5-feet so on and so forth. Remember, this is the minimum distance you should sit from the TV. You can always be seated a little further based on the size and structure of your room and your own personal comfort.
TVs today come in a number of resolutions. 32-inch TVs generally offer an HD resolution barring a few exceptions. 40-inch TVs are generally FHD resolution. 43-inch TVs offer both FHD and 4K resolution. Sizes from 43-inch all the way up to 85-inch offer a 4K resolution and some TV manufacturers offer 8K resolution starting at 65-inches and larger.
Unless you want to be future proof, you can stay clear of 8K TV for now. 4K is the resolution to consider, even at screen sizes larger than 65-inches. At 43-inches, you can consider an FHD TV over a 4K TV as at this size, telling the difference from 4 feet away is tough. Consider a better-quality panel than the resolution, especially in the budget TV space.
If you have designated space in your house for the TV, then you may want to consider a size that fits your entertainment setup. For example, there are a lot of TV cabinets with an open design that can house a 55-inch TV along with space for your gaming console, set-top-box, etc. So naturally, it makes sense to stick with a 55-inch TV. A lot of households do not have walls strong enough to hold a 75-inch or 85-inch TV. So, if you are considering a large size TV, you may want to double-check the strength of your wall or consider placing the TV on a tabletop.
This is a relatively new technology and we believe it will be nearly a decade before modular TVs become mainstream. However, brands like Samsung have shown off their “Wall” TV that is a modular TV and it is currently available in India. As the name suggests, a modular TV lets you increase the screen size at a future date without buying a full new TV. Simply add more modular panels and your TV can go from a modest 65-inches all the way up to 100-inches. Now isn’t that some cool TV tech?
That was a quick look at what TV size you should buy.
