Here are some similarities and differences between the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra

Samsung has officially unveiled the flagship Galaxy S22 series for 2022 bringing together a host of new features and upgrades. The lineup consists of the Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra, with the latter getting a Note series-like design along with S Pen support. As for the standard S22 and S22+, both phones look a lot more like last year’s Galaxy S21 series but have a refined design that gives them a more premium look than before. However, unlike last year, the top-end Galaxy S22 Ultra has been Note-ified and you can read more about how Samsung resurrected the Note and what it means for the lineup going forward in a separate story here. In this article, we are going to take a look at what is different in the Galaxy S22, S22+ and the S22 Ultra.

Samsung has finally done away with the plastic rear panel on the S21 and now the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra all feature a glass back which is topped with Gorilla Glass Victus+. The chassis is aluminium and Samsung claims it's their strongest and most durable armour aluminium in the Galaxy S-series to date. All three phones are also IP68 rated which makes them dust and water-resistant for upto 1.5 metres for 30 minutes.

The S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra feature differently sized displays but all three support upto 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ and is topped with a layer of Gorilla Glass Victus+.

The three phones are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset or Exynos 2200 SoC depending on the region and run on One UI 4.1 which is based on Android 12. Samsung has also confirmed that in India, the S22 series will launch with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. This is paired with fast LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage options to choose from.

The Galaxy S22 and S22+ share the same triple camera setup and front-facing camera while the S22 Ultra has a quad-camera array on the back in true ‘ultra’ fashion. All three have OIS, EIS and can record in 8K at 24FPS, 4K UHD at upto 60FPS and more.

All three phones have the same stereo speakers and a slew of sensors including an in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. Moreover, the S22+ and S22 Ultra also support ultra-wideband (UWB).

While Samsung has slightly reduced the battery capacity of the S22 and S22+ from the S21 series, all three phones now support 15W fast wireless charging and reverse wireless charging as well.

The Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra are three very varied phones and even though the S22 and S22+ share a lot of key hardware and features, both serve different types of user base.

Right from the design, the S22 and S22+ have a much-refined design that will ideally feel more premium in the hand thanks to the use of a glass back panel instead of “Glasstic” that Samsung notoriously used in their flagship devices until now. The camera module has the same contour-like design as we saw on the Galaxy S21 series but it's restricted to the S22 and S22+ only.

Samsung has trimmed the overall profile of the S22 and S22+ in comparison to its predecessor, the S21 lineup and now both these phones are slimmer and lighter than before. The S22 and S22+ also have a flat-edge design like we have seen so many phones adopt after the iPhone 12.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra, on the other hand, is a different beast altogether. It has a striking new design and the camera stack is fused into the back panel with multiple cutouts for each camera giving it a seamless look. It also gets a slot on the bottom left corner to house the S Pen stylus which has been upgraded as well and now offers less than 2.8ms latency.

The display on these three phones also varies in size with the S22 getting a 6.1-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display followed by a 6.6-inch Full HD+ panel on the S22+ and finally a huge 6.8-inch LTPO QHD+ AMOLED screen on the S22 Ultra. Even with a 6+ inch display, the base S22 comes across as a slightly compact phone than the other two while the S22 Ultra has a curved display.

The S22 and S22+ are only offered with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage while the S22 Ultra can be had with upto 12GB RAM and 1TB storage.

Moving on to the cameras, the S22 and S22+ share the camera stack while the S22 Ultra has a slightly different setup. You will find a 50MP main camera, a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, a 12MP ultra-wide camera and a 10MP selfie camera on the S22 and S22+.

Meanwhile, the S22 Ultra is headlined by a 108MP camera on the back, a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, a 10MP periscope telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. It also gets a higher resolution 40MP front-facing camera.

The battery capacity on the S22, S22+ has been slightly reduced while the S22 Ultra has the same 5,000mAh battery as the S21 Ultra. The reason behind this remains unclear but the S22 comes equipped with a 3,700mAh battery down from 4,000mAh on the S21 and still supports 25W fast charging. The S22+ has a 4,500mAh battery which is around 300mAh less than the 4,800mAh battery on the S21+ but supports 45W fast charging. Finally, the S22 Ultra features a 5,000mAh battery that also supports 45W fast wired charging.
