The Galaxy A73 offers balanced performance but is it worth the asking price?
The Samsung Galaxy A73 5G is a unique offering from Samsung as it offers premium features but is powered by a mid-range Qualcomm chip. This places the Galaxy A73 in the upper echelons of the mid-range segment with features like a 120Hz Super AMOLED display, IP67 rating, Gorilla Glass 5 protection, quad cameras and a 5,000mAh battery to boot. With the Snapdragon 778G at the helm of affairs, does the Galaxy A73 5G bring solid performance chops or does it get left behind in the sea of premium flagship phones priced under Rs 50,000, that’s what we will find out in this gaming and performance review of the Galaxy A73 5G.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G review: Performance and Gaming
The Samsung Galaxy A73 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 778G chipset which we have previously tested on phones such as the Realme GT Master Edition, Xiaomi 11 Lite NE 5G, iQOO Z6 Pro and more. However, all of these phones are priced well under Rs 30,000 whereas the Galaxy A73 5G costs a premium for its features. But that does not take away the fact that the A73 is a capable performer for daily use that users can depend upon. The Galaxy A73 has a thin and lightweight profile which assists in one-handed usage and is comfortable in the hand. And when it comes to the day-to-day performance of the phone, it is snappy with smooth animations thanks in part to the 120Hz refresh rate display.
We ran some synthetic benchmarks on the Galaxy A73 5G and it got some great scores that establish it as a sustained performer. In the AnTuTu benchmark, the Galaxy A73 5G got 522976 points which are in line with the scores we received from other 778G phones. In Geekbench, the Galaxy A73 5G received 774 points in single-core tests and 2868 points in multi-core tests.
The Galaxy A73 5G got 12405 points in the PCMark Work benchmark which tests the performance by running different workload tasks such as browsing, photo and video editing and more. This also means that you can expect a smooth and dependable performance from the A73 when it comes to general tasks.
We also ran a CPU Throttling test which stress tests the phone to check whether there is any apparent throttling under extensive workloads. Here, the Galaxy A73 5G was able to run up to its full potential as the test did not detect any kind of thermal throttling which means that the phone is perfectly optimized to handle intensive tasks and won’t easily get warm to the touch.
In GPU tests like 3DMark and GFXBench, the Galaxy A73 delivered good results and if you are a casual gamer, you won’t feel let down by the 778G as it can handle games like Call of Duty Mobile and BGMI with ease but don’t expect it to perform as well in intensive games like PUBG New State or Genshin Impact.
We used Gamebench metrics to analyze the gaming performance of the Galaxy A73 5G. As per the Gamebench app, the Galaxy A73 can run COD Mobile at 60FPS at 97% stability which is good and I did not feel any lags or frame drops while playing this game. It is also able to run BGMI at 40FPS at 100% stability which is great since it means that the A73 is giving a balanced performance in an intensive battle royale game. Similarly, in Asphalt 9, the Gamebench app recorded 49FPS at 96% stability and offered smooth performance throughout my gameplay session.
While these numbers are not indicative of real-world performance you can rest be assured of a well-rounded performance with the Galaxy A73. It’s got a great display for watching videos and a versatile set of cameras that you can experiment with. However, for its asking price, it does not justify a mid-range processor under the hood.
Samsung Galaxy A73 5G: Should you buy it?
We find ourselves in a catch-22 situation where the Galaxy A73 5G proves its mettle but Samsung charges a premium that doesn’t justify its mid-range performance. It has a lot going for itself with the presence of a beautiful Super AMOLED display with a high refresh rate, slim and lightweight design, dust and water resistance and a 108MP main camera with OIS. But for its starting price of ₹41,999, there are many alternatives like the Motorola Edge 30 Pro with flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, iQOO 9 with Snapdragon 888+ chipset, OnePlus 9RT with Snapdragon 888 and more.
Nevertheless, if you can get the Galaxy A73 for under ₹40,000 and want a phone that offers balanced performance, a great display, and a thin, light profile, then you will love this phone!
