Phablets are here to stay. While a lot of people (including us) criticize the huge form factor, others like the idea of having a large screen device. Speaking of which, Sony and HTC launched two new phablets this year and both of them offer dual-SIM capability and fall in the same price category.
The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra comes with a 6-inch 720p display while the HTC Desire 816 has 5.5-inch 720p display. There is a big difference in size, although the T2 Ultra gives a slimmer feel to it. Here is a specifications comparison of the two:
Sony Xperia T2 Ultra | HTC Desire 816 | |
Display | 6-inch IPS with 720p resolution (245ppi) | 5.5-inch LCD with 720p resolution (267ppi) |
Processor | 1.4GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 400 | 1.6GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 400 |
RAM | 1GB | 1.5GB |
GPU | Adreno 305 | Adreno 305 |
Storage | 8GB, expandable via microSD | 8GB, expandable via microSD |
Rear Camera | 13MP, Full HD recording capability | 13MP, Full HD recording capability |
Front Camera | 1.1MP | 5MP |
Weight | 171gms | 165gms |
Battery | 3000mAh | 2600mAh |
OS | Android 4.3 | Android 4.4.2 |
Price | 22,999 | 24,750 |
When compared on paper, the Desire 816 definitely has a better hardware, although the screen is smaller in size and also lags behind in terms of battery backup. Even though it is a bit more expensive than the Sony phablet, you still get a faster and better SoC.
To see which one is faster, we put the two phablets head to head for a benchmark test comparison. Both the T2 Ultra and the Desire 816 run on a Snapdragon 400 chipset, but the Desire 816 has a faster 1.6GHz clock speed and 1.5GB of RAM compared to 1.4GHz speed of the T2 Ultra and 1GB of RAM.

HTC Desire 816 | 20721 | 13110 | 6326 | 4861 |
The results prove that the Desire 816 has an edge over the Xperia T2 Ultra in synthetic benchmark performance. So if you are looking for a faster and a slightly smaller-sized phablet, then the HTC Desire is a better option.
