Micromax Canvas 5: First Impressions

Micromax Canvas 5: First Impressions
HIGHLIGHTS

The Micromax Canvas 5 is a comfortably priced smartphone that seems to be ready for its competition.

Indian smartphone maker Micromax’s growth in India has been quite interesting. While Chinese OEMs continue invading the country, Micromax is really the only player that has taken the competition to these companies, be it in terms of pricing or otherwise. The company recently increased its focus on design, adding smartphones like the Canvas Selfie, Canvas Spark and others that actually look really good. Now, it is ready with a new one, the Micromax Canvas 5.

At Rs. 11,999, the Canvas 5 comes with an octa-core MediaTek MT6753 SoC, clocked at 1.3GHz. In addition, the phone comes with 3GB of RAM, and has 13MP and 5MP cameras at the back and front, respectively. It also has a 1080p 5.2-inch display, and a plastic body with metallic finish on the sides.

On first look, the Canvas 5 looks like a bigger version of the budget Canvas Spark smartphone that Micromax had launched earlier. It has the same faux-leather back, and the sides are rounded off with a metallic finish. The phone feels a little too big for a 5.2-inch display, though. In addition, the display, though good with colours, is on the dimmer side. Sunlight visibility is low, if not, bad. It works for a budget device, but there are better displays out there.

A lot of people question the MediaTek MT6753’s performance capabilities today, but the fact is that MediaTek’s new SoCs are much more stable than their predecessors. While it may not clock very high, on first impressions, the phone didn’t show any lags and the UI flowed pretty smoothly. Of course, the performance can only be judged after proper load is put on the device.

I was using it under bright sunlight, so the images came out quite nice. Micromax has used a Samsung sensor here, and at least under proper sunlight, the phone seems to take good images. This is another aspect that we shall confirm once we get the phone for a full review.

The phone seems competitive on first impressions, and considering that it takes on the likes of the Asus Zenfone 2 and Xiaomi Mi 4i, it has to be so. On first impressions, the Canvas 5 seems like a quintessential budget device, and given the fact that it will be available both on offline retail and online, Micromax shouldn't find it difficult to sell this one.
