HIGHLIGHTS

The Huawei Nova 3i is one of the first smartphone companies to offer not just a dual-front camera setup, but also leverage AI to make both rear-camera snaps and selfies much better.

Camera capabilities of smartphones have come a long way since their inception. In fact, it is a known fact that the quality of the camera has become a key factor for many users in deciding which smartphone to buy.

Huawei, as a brand, is no stranger to creating products designed to cater to such users and has been the first to introduce certain new technologies to help users get the most out of their smartphone cameras. The company also has a good history of working with the famous German optics & camera manufacturer, Leica, to produce the lenses used in their cameras. Essentially, Huawei has established that it knows a thing or two when it comes to smartphone camera technology and now has taken this know-how and incorporated it to its latest smartphone in the affordable segment — the Nova 3i.

On the face of it, the Huawei Nova 3i offers a total of four cameras — 2 in the front and 2 at the back. However, both sets of cameras take advantage of the power of Artificial Intelligence to enhance photos clicked from either side. In fact, the Huawei Nova 3i is one of the first smartphone companies to offer not just a dual-front camera setup, but also leverage AI to make both rear-camera snaps and selfies much better. So if you’ve ever wondered what AI is all about, this phone can give you a pretty good indication. Amazon has declared Huawei Nova 3i as best seller in mid-range smartphones.

Without further ado, let’s take a quick look at what the cameras on the Huawei Nova 3i have to offer.

Front camera

Kicking things off with the front cameras, the Huawei Nova 3i sports a 24MP + 2MP combination, which is more than most other smartphones on the market. The image taken by the 24MP sensor contains the primary image data, while the smaller 2MP sensor is used to take the depth-of-field data. This information is then used to create bokeh shots in which the background is blurred, while the subject is in sharp focus.

Night flash

Huawei understands that selfies are meant to be taken anywhere, and at anytime. As such, the lighting conditions for a quality image may not be ideal. When ambient lighting conditions are not ideal, the screen of the Nova 3i acts as the flash. In dimly lit scenarios, it acts as a flash, while in very dark conditions, the screen lights up entirely. The result is brightly lit selfies even when the lighting conditions are less than ideal.

Rear camera

At the back of the phone is a 16MP + 2MP camera setup that works in pretty much the same as the front. The 16MP sensor takes the main photo, while the 2MP sensor feels in data about depth. So just like the front camera, you’ll be able to bokeh shots.

AI beautification

As mentioned earlier, the Huawei Nova 3i takes the power of Artificial Intelligence, and uses it to help take better selfies. The smartphone's beautification algorithm is designed to understand aesthetic differences among people and is smart enough to automatically recognise your gender, age and skin tone to make fine adjustments, aimed to enhance the looks. Users can also choose up to six levels of beautification, so they can adjust the image as per their taste.

AI scene recognition

The AI in the Huawei Nova 3i is not just used to beautify selfies, it can also recognise the scene in which the image is being taken in. By recognising what the user is taking a picture of, it automatically applies the required setting based on that particular scene. According to Huawei has equipped the AI algorithm to ei, the AI recognises over 500 scenarios in 22 categories. So, the settings applied to a picture of a flower will be quite different to the ones applied to a sunset

3D Qmojis and background stickers

The AI in the Huawei Nova 3i is also used for a bunch of fun features. The device is smart enough to read, understand and translate facial expressions. This is then used to generate a personalised Qmoji pack, which can be shared on social media via GIF or video formats. The phone is also intelligent enough to can also differentiate between the subject and the background and change the image to one from your gallery or use one of the pre-loaded ones.

Studio lighting effects

The Huawei Nova 3i also comes with a number of lighting effects that aim to mimic the lighting that professional photographers use in a studio. The phone offers multiple different effects that intelligently mimics different angles of light. The Soft Light effect places a light source to the side of the user’s face, creating a triangular shape of light under the eyes. In Butterfly lighting, light is projected at 45 degrees from the top, creating a shadow under the nose, eye crease, lip lines and cheeks. Split lighting divides the user’s face into two proportional halves, with one side being in shadow and the other in light. In stage lighting, the subject’s face and torso are separated from the background. This lighting also has a classic mode in which the image in taken in monochrome, which adds a vintage vibe to the image.

As you can imagine, the combination of hardware, software, and A.I. makes the Huawei Nova 3i one of the most unique smartphones in its price segment. Add to this a slew of fun features, as well as an eye-catching design — you get a device that might want to look into if you are in the market for a camera-centric device under 25K.
