HIGHLIGHTS

With multiple Nokia leaks and renders now at hand, we take a look at how upcoming Nokia phones may end up being.

Nokia’s return to the smartphone business has been in the news ever since Microsoft dumped the residue of the Finnish giant’s previous stint, and since then, leaks, specifications and rumours surrounding a certain Nokia D1C have been doing the rounds. From initial rumours quoting flagship specifications to most of the recent renders stating the makings of a budget phone, we’ve seen enough leaks and renders to take a guess at how the upcoming phone will be.

Initial renders: The Nokia D1C

However, the latest leak that is being circulated quotes completely different specifications from what we’ve heard of late. While most recent leaks state that the Nokia D1C will run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 430 SoC with 2GB/3GB RAM variants, the latest leak suggests that the Nokia D1C will actually run on one of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 series SoCs, along with 4GB RAM and 64GB of native storage. Earlier leaks also pointed towards two screen sizes – 5-inch and 5.5-inch form factors, with the smaller variant housing a 13MP primary camera and the larger variant housing a 16MP primary camera along with a fingerprint sensor.

…but apparently it will be like this.

The new Nokia phone is also expected to run on Android Nougat, keeping it up to do with the latest available firmware. In terms of looks, while erstwhile manufacturing partner HMD Global has stated in interviews that the new Nokia phones will be relatable and symbolic of the company’s glorious past, most of the leaks have pointed to a Lumia-like design, with curved sides and pointed corner edges.

However, there have been variations in the leaked images, although credibility of each of these remain questionable. Apart from the mostly leaked photos (like the ones mentioned above), other leaks have pointed at slightly different designs with slim bezels, slightly curved metal rear panels, and even an HTC-esque build with antenna bands on top and bottom edges. The latest leak seems to show a device with slim screen bezels, although nothing else can be discerned from there.

HTC-esque Nokia renders – Would you buy this?

While all of this seems to be in place for Nokia’s budget smartphone offering, we’ve also come across a flagship device that the company may be simultaneously working on. Reportedly codenamed Nokia C1, leaked renders of the device show a design that resembles somewhat of a cross between flagship Lumias and the initial Sony Ericsson Xperia flagships of olden days. In terms of specifications, the Nokia C1 will reportedly be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 830 SoC, along with 4GB RAM, up to 128GB of native storage, a 3210mAh battery pack, and a central dual-camera module with Xenon flash.

Throwback to good designs: Nokia Lumia meets Sony Ericsson Xperia?

With HMD Global due for presentation at the Mobile World Congress 2017 and so many leaks at hand, we expect the company to show off multiple devices at the conference. While the Nokia D1C (which we expect to launch with a different name) is now being held as a near-certainty, we may have to wait slightly longer for the flagship counterparts to launch. As of now, we’ve got our eyes and ears strained for more news on what is the most anticipated comeback by a tech company in 2017!
