Evolution of mobile phones: From basic communication tools to highly personalised gadgets
HIGHLIGHTS

Mobile phones have come a long way since the bare bones communication devices of the past

Mobile phones have come a long way since they were first made available to the public. From bare bones communication devices, all the way to high-tech gadgets that are essentially computers that we carry around in our pockets. They have become a style statement and users have done all sorts of things over the years in order to make their device more personal. This need for personalisation comes as no surprise considering how attached we are to our smartphones.

More than just a phone

The earliest mobile phones, such as the Motorola DynaTAC, had a single job, make and receive calls. As technology progressed, people were soon able to send and receive short messages on their phones like the Nokia 2010. Pretty soon, phones started taking up other roles such as an alarm clock, calculator and more. However, things really started to change after phones, like the Ericsson R380, started giving people access to the internet, and thus the smartphone was born. The modern smartphone is a TV, a camera, a portable music player, and so much more. And all this tech is crammed into a device that is about as large as a bar of chocolate. These days, making calls and sending SMS’ is no longer the primary concern of smartphones buyers.

An extension of your personality

The first mobile phones may only be able to do one thing, but they were still priced at thousands of dollars. So, the fact that you owned one of the devices was more than enough to make a statement. As time passed, smartphones became cheaper and so more people were able to afford the gadget. So a need arose to customize each device in order to suit one’s personality. After all, the modern smartphone is one of the most personal gadgets someone has. Hence, it should be an extension of the user’s personality as well.

One of the earliest ways users were able to customise their phones was by changing the ringtone followed by changing the wallpaper. Now though, users can customise almost every aspect of the smartphone. If that isn’t enough, people can also buy funky cases, which not only make the phone stand out from the crowd, but also help protect the phone in case it falls down.

Completely customised smartphones

Sometimes, changing the ringtone or buying a case isn’t enough for some users. These people are looking for phones that are unlike anything else out there. Such users generally opt to have their names etched onto the body of the phone, or create custom cases for their phones. Some have also gone so far as to use bejeweled cases to make their devices a fashion statement.

OPPO: Helping you stand out from the crowd

The phones comes with a unique Diwali theme and icons as well as a wallpaper of Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor.
