As the flag bearer of Qualcomm’s mobile platforms, the Snapdragon 845 is at the heart of most current generation of flagship devices in the market and has a lot to offer. Let’s take a look at the coolest features of the chipset as well as the benefits that you stand to get.
The Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform also comes with the new Spectra™ 280 image signal processor (ISP) for improved camera quality. The company claims that this ISP captures better 4K video that packs 64 times more color data with high dynamic range (HDR) and is the first to bring this to 4K video capture. This means that smartphones will be able to record 4K HDR videos with over a billion shades of colours, so you get more precise colour reproduction, which leads to more true to life colours. With the Spectra™ 280 ISP, smartphones are not only able to capture videos in 4K HDR quality, but also slow down these videos (slow-motion) at 720p at 480fps. Further, it also offers multi frame noise reduction, so you get clearer photos. Moreover, Qualcomm says that the new ISP will also be able to offer 30 percent better power consumption, which means you can capture videos all day and still have plenty of battery life left over.
With the Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform, Qualcomm is doing its bit to make Artificial Intelligence on mobile devices faster and smarter. The chipset sports a third generation Qualcomm AI Engine. The AI engine is made up of specialized cores that can process all sorts of AI algorithms and neural networks on-device. Increasing the performance of these cores and supporting various frameworks allow developers to do more AI on the device side. This means that consumers will have quicker, more reliable access to AI features for their cameras, voice recognition, and gaming experiences. For example, your camera can summon information about the scene, object, and location around you without a constant connection to the internet, which works faster and increases user privacy.
The Adreno™ 630 Visual Processing Subsystem in the Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform offers powerful gaming components, capable of producing very good graphic details and delivering some impressive frame rates. At the core is the Adreno GPU, but you also have other specialized hardware that enables an immersive gaming experience that span across sound, connectivity, and long battery life. It’s also impressive enough to power eXtended reality (XR) experiences on a mobile device. XR experiences are those that span augmented, virtual and mixed reality. Further, Qualcomm notes that with the subsystem in place, the Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform is able to offer room-scale six degrees of freedom (6DoF) with simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). SLAM helps with features such as wall collision detection, which ensures that you don’t run into a wall while wearing a headset.
This mobile platform also features the Snapdragon™ X20 Modem, which is its second-generation Gigabit LTE solution, while others have barely broke the Gigabit barrier. The company says that the modem supports a wide range of technology and frequency band configurations. The modem can support LTE Category 18 peak download speeds of 1.2Gbps. The connection speeds offered by the Snapdragon™ X20 modem is said to download a 3GB movie in less than 3 minutes.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform makes use of a semi-custom designed Qualcomm® Kryo™ 385 CPU architecture, which are built on Arm® Cortex™ technology. The chipset uses eight of these cores. The entire chipset is also based on the 10nm 2nd Gen FinFET manufacturing process, which not only makes the chipsets more powerful, but more battery efficient as well. In fact, Qualcomm says that with the Snapdragon 845 chipset, users will see up to a 30 percent performance increase compared to the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 835 Mobile Platform
Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform features the company's new Secure Processing Unit, which adds an extra layer of hardware security to protect your personal data. With this new architecture layer, personal data is stored in a separate location from the location of the OS and as a result, hackers will not have direct access to your data if they manage to gain access to your phone.
