A look at the BlackBerry Torch 9860 – RIM’s newest full-touch offering
RIM has launched a new full touch device – the Blackberry Torch 9860, a month after they launched the Bold 9900, and a few weeks after the Torch 9810 hit shelves. The last time Blackberry offered a full touch device was back in 2010 in the form of the Storm 2.
The Blackberry Torch 9860 sports a 3.7-inch TFT LCD screen and is by far the biggest screen on a Blackberry. It has an 800 x 480 (WVGA) resolution with 253 ppi. It is powered by a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm processor with 768 MB of RAM. The Blackberry 9860 comes with 4 gigs of inbuilt storage, while the external storage is expandable up to 32 gigs.
Running on Blackberry 7 OS, the Torch 9860 uses what Blackberry calls “Liquid Graphics” to deliver a fast and fluid UI while browsing the Internet, accessing pictures or videos, or while playing graphically intensive games. The Blackberry 9860 features a digital compass which makes use of OS 7’s support for Augmented Reality and lets you run Augmented Reality apps using it. The Blackberry 9860 also features a 5MP camera with flash and is capable of shooting 720p HD videos. The claimed talk time is up to 6.2 hours while the standby time is up to 11 days.
Brief Hands-On
Holding the Blackberry Torch 9860 in the hand, it feels quite sturdy while being lightweight. The UI is quite slick and feels extremely fast paced. We managed to open thinkdigit.com on the device and it rendered the page pretty quickly.

The sad part though is the fact it doesn’t reflow the text, thus requiring you to constantly scroll for reading. This Blackberry will not disappoint heavy text users and lovers of multiple input options, as it comes with three different keyboard styles – SureType, Muti Touch input and the Full QWERTY keyboard.
The Blackberry Torch 9860 is priced at Rs. 28,490/-
