82% of Digit readers think Nokia should adopt Android
We received a total of 4761 responses out of which majority 2554 respondents, 53 percent, said Nokia should adopt the Android platform. As many as 1373 respondents, 29 percent, said Nokia should go Android but also continue with WP.
Nokia once used to dominate the mobile phone market. But, with the emergence and ever-increasing popularity of smartphones, the likes of Samsung and Apple have taken the top spots. Over the years, Nokia’s growth remained sluggish and the company was later compelled to look for alternatives to reverse its fortunes.
Among many factors behind Nokia’s slump is the fact that the company chose to stay away from Android at a time when almost all other major mobile phone companies were adopting it and gaining success. In a bid to revive its fortunes in smartphone segment, Nokia had to kill off its own operating system Symbian and switched to Microsoft’s new Windows Phone platform.
Nokia currently offers a range of WP smartphones under the Lumia branding. However, the Lumias haven’t taken off the way Nokia would have hoped.
Though it’ll be pretty early to comment on the future of WP8 smartphones, Nokia may have to explore more alternatives to sustain in the competitive market, especially in case the WP devices don’t succeed.
One of the options, widely debated, is Nokia switching to Android, the most popular smartphone OS. Companies such as HTC, Sony and particularly Samsung have managed to change their fortunes through Android-based smartphones.
Back in January, media reports said Nokia was keeping an open mind about using Android in future.
During an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop had said: “So, the way I think about it is, in the current war on ecosystems, we are fighting with Windows Phone. That’s what we’re doing. Now, what we’re always doing is asking, how does that evolve? What’s next? What role does HTML5 play? What role does Android or other things play in the future? We’re looking further into the future, but it terms of what we’re bringing to market, and what we’re immediately focused on, we’re focused on Windows Phone.”
With Nokia’s strong base in emerging markets and familiarity of Android, the Finnish mobile maker may take a chance by offering Android-based smartphones, may be low-cost ones, in select markets. The company has an edge with its marketing muscle, brand recall and connect with the smartphone category along with the design and manufacturing prowess to challenge Samsung.
Nokia may even try offering devices based on WP as well Android, like Samsung and HTC.
In our previous weekly poll, we asked should Nokia go Android to survive in the smartphone market?
We received a total of 4761 responses out of which majority 2554 respondents, 53 percent, said Nokia should adopt the Android platform.
However, a lot of people also supported the idea that Nokia should offer devices based on both the platforms. As many as 1373 respondents, 29 percent, said Nokia should go Android but also continue with Windows Phone. Only 834 respondents, 18 percent, said Nokia shouldn’t switch to Android.
