Facing BSOD error because of CrowdStrike update? Here is what you should do

As of this morning, there have been reports coming from all over the world of Windows PC users experiencing the dreaded Blue Screen Of Death, also known as BSOD. This error has been cropping up after the latest update to their services put out by the US-based cybersecurity firm, CrowdStrike. If you are also experiencing this issue, the developers over at CrowdStrike have rolled back the update and have published a four-step process that you need to follow to get back into your Windows PC.

How to fix BSOD error after CrowdStrike Update?

A few hours after the first reports of BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) started coming in from users across the globe, we got the first update from the engineering team of CrowdStrike. It was posted on their sub-Reddit, r/crowdstrike. There is a 4-step process that you need to follow to ensure that you are able to boot back into your Windows PC if you’re experiencing a BSOD error.

Steps to get back into your Windows PC after the CrowdStrike Update:

  • Boot Windows into Safe Mode or the Windows Recovery Environment
  • Navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike directory
  • Locate the file matching “C-00000291*.sys”, and delete it.
  • Boot the host normally.

If you are an affected user and are not able to get back into your system due after the latest CrowdStrike update, then you might want to defer these steps to your IT systems administrators who might be able to get access to the required folders.

What is the latest update?

On the same thread on Reddit, where the moderators of the sub-Reddit updated the steps to work around the Blue Screen Of Death after the CrowdStrike update earlier today, have said – CrowdStrike Engineering has identified a content deployment related to this issue and reverted those changes. The reported error code that was being displayed on people’s Windows PC was – “Tech-Alert-Windows-crashes-related-to-Falcon-Sensor-2024-07-19”. Services across the globe, including airline and railway operations, supermarkets, hospitals, and major news networks, including some of the systems with us, have been affected by this latest CrowdStrike update.
