Facebook releases top ten topics of 2015 in India

From Modi to Deepika Padukone, here is what Indians were talking about on Facebook this year.

As the year comes to a close, Facebook, the social media giant, has released its 'year in review' report. The list paint a picture of what Facebook users in India and worldwide were talking about in 2015. These trends range from politics to sporting events, issues of the world, popular personalities and more. According to this 'year in review' report by Facebook the top ten topics for 2015 in India include the following -: 

1. Narendra Modi

Yes, Mr Prime Minister was the most trending topic this year. This is not surprising considering that Modi was much talked about on Facebook, given his active participation on social media and the Digital India campaign. Remember all the memes about the Chennai flood photoshopped picture? That must have earned him some extra points on this list. 

2. E-commerce boom

Flipkart, Amazon, Snapdeal, Zomato, Foodpanda, Myntra, the list is a long and exhaustive, and It's all we have heard this year. E-commerce websites are probably the most visited websites in India given the boom in online shopping. A definite trendsetter 

3. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

The late and great indian President was much adored on Facebook this year. After his demise, Facebook was flooded by posts sharing popular quotes and sayings by Kalam. He is undoubtedly a genius mind Indians will remember for time to come.

4. Baahubali: The Beginning

Bahubali, the historical fiction directed by SS Rajamouli came in the limelight because of the extensive use of impressive visual effects. The film made on a budget of Rs. 120 crores went on to become the Third highest grossing Indian film globally and the highest grossing Indian film within India. Epic, I say. 

5. Nepal Earthquakes

On 25 April, 2015, Nepal was struck by an earthquake measuring 7.8 in magnitude. The devastating calamity took the lives of more than 9,000 people and left another 23,000 injured in its wake. Facebook users came out in huge numbers to support victims of this tragedy and it was probably one of the biggest examples of social media coming together for a humane cause

6. Salman Khan
 

Master of the belt-booty shake, Salman Khan is probably the most worshipped celebrity in Bollywood. With Bajrangi Bahijaan and an impending prison sentence, Khan was definitely one of Facebook's hot topics of conversation.

7. Cricket World Cup and Indian Premier League
 

The cricket crazy people that we are, it's no surprise that the ICC Cricket world Cup and IPL made this list of most popular trending topics in India. Give them a a good game of cricket, some beer and a bowl of muchies and fans of the sport will find themselves in seventh heaven. Lots of these fans usually trickle to social media post a good match and Facebook's usually where all the conversation happens.  

8. Bihar Elections
 

Held over 5 phases between October and November, the Bihar elections saw a lot of controversial opinions emerge on Facebook. Feeds were flooded with posts ranging from Nitish Kumar's win to Lalu Yadav's sons getting ministerial portfolios. The Bihar elections certainly created a strong buzz on Facebook.  

9. Deepika Padukone
 

The rise and rise of Deepika Padukone made it to number 9 on Facebook's top ten topics in India. The actress has featured in many popular films like Piku and Tamasha this year. She also won the Filmfare award for best actress for her film Piku. As unkind as social media is, her love interests were also scrutinised by Indian Facebookers throughout the year.   

10. Indian Army
 

It's sad to see the Indian Army make the end of this list. I say we need more appreciation for the armed forces, but nevertheless, the Army made it to this top ten list by Facebook as users spoke about everything ranging from OROP to militant strikes. 

So, those were the top 10 topics of discussion on Facebook for 2015. Some of the top global topics inculde the US presidential elections, the Paris attacks, Syrian civil war and the Greek debt crisis. Ed Sheeran topped the list of most talked-about entertainers and Game of Thrones ruled the small screen as the most talked-about TV show. Clash of Kings was Facebook's Game of the Year with more that 70 million palyers worldwide.
