Don’t Buy Apple MacBook Accessories Before You See These Cheaper Alternatives

Don’t Buy Apple MacBook Accessories Before You See These Cheaper Alternatives

It is a no brainer that if you want to buy anything Apple, it will definitely cost you more than what others would offer. Sure, the ecosystem part is there but when you on a hunt for accessories and that too for MacBook, then you definitely should look for third-party options as it won’t hurt your ecosystem (as they are not part of it), might come with more features and most importantly, save you some money that you can later invest buying a next iteration of MacBook with 5% performance upgrade.

Before we begin, we would like to clarify a few things that you might or might not know. The first point is most items in this list are not MFI certified and there is a reason for that. MFI stands for Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad. While buying MFI certified accessories won’t do any harm to your MacBook, finding them is one problem and cost is another factor as MFI certified products are generally costly.

Now, let’s take a look at the top third-party accessories for Apple MacBook.

Alternative to Apple MacBook chargers

While Apple sells USB C and MagSafe chargers, there are no third-party MagSafe chargers available in the Indian market which can be trusted with your MacBook. So here, we are going to recommend you USB type C adapters. If you insist on buying a third-party MagSafe charger, then what you can do is buy the recommended adapters below and pair it with type C to MagSafe cable which we will be recommending you in the later part of this article.

Alternatives to Magic Mouse

When you are on the lookout for an alternative to Magic Mouse, you have to compromise two things. One is the touch sensitivity and another is charging a mouse from the port located at the bottom (this one’s not that bad I guess). If you compromise those two features, there are multiple features that you can enjoy from the given list of alternatives to Magic Mouse.

Logitech MX Master 3S for Mac

The Logitech MX Master 3S for Mac offers a premium ergonomic design with an 8K DPI sensor that tracks on virtually any surface, including glass (minimum 4 mm thickness). Its signature MagSpeed electromagnetic scrolling wheel allows for ultra-fast scrolling of 1,000 lines per second with both ratchet and free-spin modes. The mouse features quiet clicks that reduce noise by 90% compared to previous models. The side-scrolling wheel provides horizontal navigation, which is particularly useful when working with timeline-based applications.

This mouse connects to up to three Mac devices simultaneously via Bluetooth and supports Logitech Flow for seamless control between computers. Battery life extends to 70 days on a full charge, with a quick-charge function providing 3 hours of use from just 1 minute of charging via the included USB-C cable. However, it’s worth noting that some users report occasional Bluetooth lag issues with MacBooks, particularly when compared to Apple’s native peripherals. The MX Master 3S has a relatively low 125 Hz polling rate, which may feel less smooth on ProMotion displays that refresh at 120 Hz. Priced at approximately ₹8,995, this is the most expensive option in our roundup.

Logitech MX Anywhere 3S

The Logitech MX Anywhere 3S combines compact dimensions (100.5 × 65 × 34.4 mm and 99g) with high-end features, making it ideal for on-the-go MacBook users. It features the same 8K DPI sensor as its larger sibling, tracking on virtually all surfaces including glass. The MagSpeed electromagnetic scroll wheel provides both precise and rapid scrolling capabilities in a more portable form factor, and the quiet click technology makes it suitable for use in quiet environments like libraries and coffee shops.

Like the MX Master 3S, this mouse connects to up to three devices simultaneously via Bluetooth and offers the same impressive battery life of 70 days on a full charge with quick-charge functionality. While it lacks the side scroll wheel and thumb controls of the Master series, its smaller size makes it more portable without sacrificing essential functionality. The polling rate remains at 125 Hz, which is adequate for most users but may not feel perfectly smooth on ProMotion displays. Priced at approximately ₹7,199, it represents a good balance between performance and portability for Mac users who travel frequently.

Keychron M3

The Keychron M3 stands out as an exceptional solution specifically for MacBook Pro users with ProMotion displays. Featuring a PixArt PAW3395 sensor with up to 26,000 DPI and 650 IPS tracking speed, it offers precision that exceeds many premium alternatives. The mouse provides multiple connectivity options: Bluetooth 5.1 with remarkably low latency (which is rare for Bluetooth mice), a compact USB-C dongle that doesn’t protrude excessively from MacBook ports, and a wired USB-C connection for charging or zero-latency operation.

Available with either a 1,000 Hz polling rate, the M3 delivers a much smoother cursor experience than the Magic Mouse’s 90Hz polling rate, especially on ProMotion displays. The M3’s simple companion app allows for mission control mapping and other customizations, while its lightweight design (79g) makes it comfortable for extended use. Some minor downsides include an overly sensitive scroll wheel click, lack of smooth scrolling, and shorter battery life than Apple’s offerings. Priced at approximately ₹6,529, it provides exceptional value for Mac users seeking performance without compromise.

Alternatives to USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter

This is where things gets interesting as in this category, you have multiple budget options and if you decide to pay in similar range of Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, you get much better specifications including more ports, ability to use ethernet and manual switch for each port for better control over everything.

Anker USB C Hub PowerExpand+ 7 in 1 PD Hub

The Anker PowerExpand+ 7-in-1 hub expands connectivity with a 4K HDMI output (30Hz), SD and microSD card readers, two USB-A 3.0 ports, a USB-C data port, an Ethernet port, and a USB-C Power Delivery port. This configuration offers significantly more functionality than Apple’s official adapter, particularly with the addition of wired network connectivity and memory card slots. The hub’s aluminium construction helps with heat dissipation while providing a premium feel that complements MacBook aesthetics.

Data transfer speeds reach up to 5Gbps through its USB ports, efficiently handling external storage devices and peripherals. The Power Delivery pass-through charging supports up to 60W for your MacBook, with the hub requiring some power for its own operation. Priced at  ₹5,999, this adapter represents good value compared to Apple’s more expensive solution, especially considering the additional functionality it provides. Its portable design makes it suitable for both desk use and travel.

UGREEN 7 Port USB 3.0 Hub

The UGREEN 7 Port USB 3.0 Hub focuses on maximising USB connectivity with seven USB 3.0 ports, each featuring an independent on/off switch with LED indicators. Unlike typical hubs, it includes a 24W power supply (12V/2A) that enables it to power multiple high-consumption devices simultaneously without performance degradation, making it ideal for external drives and other power-hungry peripherals.

This hub specialises in USB expansion rather than offering HDMI output or card readers, making it perfect for users who primarily need additional USB ports. The included power adapter ensures stable connections even with devices that draw significant power. The hub features smart charging technology that automatically detects device charging protocols for optimal power delivery and includes a 1-metre cable for flexible positioning. Compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux, this hub is priced at ₹4,850.

Anker USB C Hub, PowerExpand+ 5 in 1 PD Hub

The Anker PowerExpand+ 5-in-1 hub offers essential connectivity with a 4K HDMI port (30Hz), two USB-A 3.0 ports, a USB-C data port, and a USB-C port supporting up to 100W Power Delivery pass-through charging (minus 15W that the hub requires for operation and pass-through charging requires a charger which is not included). This configuration provides the core functionality needed by most MacBook users, allowing you to connect peripherals, an external display, and power simultaneously.

The hub weighs 78g and measures 14.99mm in thickness, making it suitably portable for travel. It supports data transfer speeds up to 5Gbps and works with various USB-C laptops including MacBooks, iPads Pro, and Windows machines. While the hub is bus-powered, it supports pass-through charging when connected to a power source. Priced at  ₹2,998, it represents good value for users who need fundamental ports without additional features like card readers or Ethernet.

Anker 547 USB-C Hub (7-in-2)

The Anker 547 features a unique dual USB-C connection design that occupies two adjacent ports on your MacBook, offering expanded connectivity including a Thunderbolt USB-C port, a USB-C data port, two USB-A ports, an HDMI port, and SD/microSD card readers. This hub is specifically designed for MacBooks with adjacent USB-C/Thunderbolt ports and is engineered to avoid obstructing the MagSafe port on newer models, ensuring compatibility with current MacBook designs.

The hub’s multi-function USB-C port supports up to 100W pass-through charging, while the Thunderbolt port enables data transfer up to 40 Gbps and can connect to a 5K display at 60 Hz. The HDMI port supports 4K resolution at 30 Hz, not 60 Hz as previously stated. The dual-connection approach provides more stable data throughput and helps prevent accidental disconnections which is a common issue with single-connection hubs. Priced at  ₹4,699, this hub provides excellent functionality for users who need reliable, high-speed connections and expanded port options.

Spigen 4-in-1 USB Hub

The Spigen 4-in-1 USB Hub offers a straightforward expansion solution with two USB-A and two USB-C ports, supporting USB 3.2 Gen1 with data transfer speeds of up to 5Gbps. This simple configuration allows connection to multiple USB peripherals simultaneously while maintaining a compact, portable design.

The hub is bus-powered, drawing power directly from your MacBook without requiring an external power source, which contributes to its portability. Unlike the other options, this hub doesn’t support video output or pass-through charging, focusing instead on basic USB expansion at an affordable price. Priced at  ₹899, it is the cheapest option in our list and good choice for users who simply need additional USB ports for mice, keyboards, or flash drives without requiring display connectivity or charging features.

Alternative to USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable

In the Indian market, there are very few alternatives available for Apple’s USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable. Some are prized more than Apple’s own offering and offered no extra value and brands so naturally, those were discluded from this list. But we were still able to find one good alternative with good reviews and priced almost half of what Apple would charge you.

Mcdodo 140W

The Mcdodo 140W Magnetic USB-C cable offers a magnetic charging solution for MacBook users, providing an affordable alternative to Apple’s official MagSafe 3 cable. Unlike Apple’s MagSafe 3, which connects to a dedicated magnetic charging port, the Mcdodo cable uses a USB-C port and attaches magnetically via an included adapter. It supports up to 140W of power delivery, making it compatible with high-power requirements for devices like the 16-inch MacBook Pro. The cable features an LED indicator that turns amber when charging and green when fully charged, offering a clear visual indication of charging status. Priced at ₹2,299, it is a value-for-money deal if you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the official product.

Alternatives to Apple Thunderbolt 5 Pro

While Thunderbolt 5 might be the future of high-speed data transfers, as of now, we don’t see much devices that can utilise such bandwidth and users often find Thunderbolt 4 enough for general tasks. For this reason, we don’t see many options available. But we were able to find one option which costs 1k less than the original cable and provides almost the same functionality.

OWC-0.3M-Thunderbolt-5

The OWC 0.3M Thunderbolt 5 Cable offers an alternative to Apple’s premium Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable at a slightly lower price point. This compact cable is Intel certified and delivers 80Gb/s bi-directional bandwidth for data transfers, with a bandwidth boost mode that supports up to 120Gb/s specifically for display connections. The cable supports up to three 8K displays, making it suitable for demanding visual workflows. Unlike Apple’s cable which provides native 120Gb/s bandwidth for all connections, the OWC cable differentiates between standard data transfers and display-specific bandwidth.

Built with active cable technology featuring an embedded E-Mark IC chip, the OWC cable supports up to 240W (48V/5A) power delivery, matching Apple’s cable in charging capability. At just 0.3 meters (11.8 inches) in length, this cable is significantly shorter than Apple’s 1-meter offering, making it less versatile for desk setups but potentially ideal for direct connections between closely positioned devices. Priced at ₹5,658 on Amazon India, it represents a modest saving compared to Apple’s cable (approximately ₹6,000-6,100). The cable is backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, USB4, and USB-C devices, providing flexibility across various connection needs

Which one should you pick?

The correct answer which you might not want to hear (or read in this case) is “It depends” on your budget and what functionality you aim for. For example, if you are a designer, then buying MX Master 3S over the official Apple Magic Mouse will be worth it, despite of its higher price range.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a Thunderbolt 5 cable and have no issues spending an extra ₹1000, then you should go for the official offering instead of the alternatives available in the market. Another example would be an expansion hub or adapter which comes in a variety of features and if you are only looking for a basic expansion slot, then you get it done under ₹1000 instead of paying 6x to buy an official Apple accessorise.
