Samsung, oh Samsung, You are a winner

Updated on 05-Aug-2024

Samsung, oh Samsung,
What have you done,
Copying Apple, you have again begun,
‘With Galaxy AI, you led the charge,
And made a difference with the Buds,
But back to square one, you have returned.
People call the Buds3 and the Watch Ultra Apple’s clones,
But remember, you are not alone,
Boo-Man stands with you,
In this fight against the world.
I mock Apple,
But I will stand with you,
Because standing against the world is what I do.

[Note: This is a satirical piece that is published in Digit Magazine, where our fictitious character, BooMan, takes on a contrarian stance on popular tech opinions. Enjoy, as BooMan takes on the world!]

If you read this and, given my absence from the magazine for the last couple of months, you thought that I was done, then you could not be farther from the truth. I was never gone. I was simply re-juicing the cynic in me and preparing for an occasion just like this.

While watching the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event, I was applauding Samsung for most of its announcements, and I thought, “Oh! They took inspiration from Apple and are invading their space, rather, are providing their Android compatriots viable alternatives to Apple’s products.” Then, I went on to the internet. People across the board were trashing Samsung for “copying” Apple’s AirPods and their Watch Ultra. But why give Samsung the flak?

All of you Android users cry that companies are not innovating like Apple. You want a seamless ecosystem, which Apple has. You want to get rid of the Green bubble, but Apple won’t budge. You asked for AirDrop and got a quick share. The companies are trying and leading in terms of innovation, too! Apple has fallen behind in more ways than one, and Android folk are trying to maintain the lead. And, they would, if not for you crying menaces.

“Samsung really likes to do a weird thing where they have something good and unique going for a while and then completely ditch it and copy Apple.”

BooMan: I don’t see anything wrong here. As they say – “In every competition, there are no winners or losers, only learners.”

You start Reddit threads against the same companies that save you from entering the walled garden of the Apple Ecosystem by trying their best and staying ahead of the curve. But, when someone like Samsung comes forth and provides you with viable alternatives to Apple’s products without making you empty your wallets or draw out a loan, you crib and cry. WHY?

I honestly think what you did with the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra is amazing! And the Buds3 and Buds3 Pro, if they are able to replicate the magic of the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, then I am sure you have a winner on your hands. Let these unapologetic and ungrateful folks come at you for having “copied” Apple’s products. I am sure these are the same people who ask ChatGPT to write their “original” code.

“Copying” a brand is something that is taken as a very backwards move by the ever-salty tech community on the internet. What they do not understand is, you will get a better product out of it. If there are more players in the same space, THERE WILL BE INNOVATION! And when there is innovation and competition, the costs will go down. I am sure Mr Tim Apple would not budge, and will come up with some quirky one-liner touting Apple’s horns for being the company whose innovations are always the best, and with every launch, they launch the *insert superlative* (mostly best-ever) product, every time they take to the stage.

Well, Mr Tim Apple, stay in your walled garden. The world outside is scary. There is competition everywhere, and companies are innovating. In your ball-pit of absurdly overpriced products, wipe your tears with the ₹1,900 Microfiber Cloth and milk the blind fanboys who cannot help but empty their wallets in your glass boxes, which you call Apple Stores.

And, if you, the person reading this, are going to come at me, be prepared. I am well rested and ready. 🙂

The ultimate contrarian, BooMan is the final boss you will have to face in the sea of opinions about technology. He will unapologetically put out his contrarian opinions about all things tech. He has come out of the shades of the magazine, and is now writing on Digit.in. Take his opinions with a grain of salt, as BooMan is completely ficticious and all his work is satirical in nature.
