Lenovo IdeaPad Lynx K3011: First Impressions

HIGHLIGHTS

Getting our hands on and around the rather large 11.6-inch Lenovo IdeaPad Lynx.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Lynx K3011 is a new Windows 8 Pro tablet from the company running on the Intel Clover Trail-W dual-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz along with 2GB LPDDR2 RAM. The tablet weighs in at 667 grams, and is just 9.45mm thick. The real point of attraction should be (for some) the 11.6 inch IPS display with a resolution of 1366×768. We were at Lenovo’s event today and managed to get our hands on it briefly to get a feel for it ourselves.

We got our hands on the rather large IdeaPad Lynx, and we couldn’t help but be incredibly impressed with the build quality of the tablet. What was especially nice was the weaved and ribbed finish on the back, which will ensure that the tablet doesn’t slip out of your hands despite the size. It is slightly heavy though, weighing in at 667 grams.

The gestures and touch response of the tablet is near excellent, although we did feel that the size of the screen would not make it ideal for portrait use due to some level of imbalance.

The great thing though is the keyboard dock it comes with is rather nice though, with its own battery, an extremely secure mechanism of docking the tablet, but the one little peeve was the space-bar. We are rather used to hitting the space-bar on the edge, but every time we did so on the Lynx, the keystroke didn’t register. The other that struck us as odd was the USB 2.0 ports, in a time and age when USB 3.0 is increasingly becoming the standard.

From the few minutes we were able to spend with the Lenovo IdeaPad Lynx, we feel it could be a nice addition to the slew of Windows 8 tablets out there, but until we’ve run the tablet through our review, we reserve our final judgement. Do also check out our first impressions with the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2.
