The dinosaur family tree
Shown here is the dinosaur family tree. The last known ancestor to the birds, surviving crocodilians and the dinosaurs was a creature known as Teleocrater rhadinus which lived about 245 million years ago. The two families of dinosaurs, the Ornithischians (bird-hipped) and the Saurischians (lizard-hipped) descended from this creature. Modern birds have descended from the Theropods, some of whom were probably feathered. If you are looking for the marine reptiles such as the Ichthyosaurs and the Mosasaurs, they are even less related to the dinosaurs than the Pterodactyls.
