With the world still in the grips of an unprecedented pandemic, a lot of us have now shifted to working from home. So, what do you do with that free time then? Well, catch up on some much-needed TV watching, and we’ve got a list of some of the best shows that have just started airing or will hit screens soon. Most of the shows mentioned in this list are and will be available to stream on various OTT platforms like Netflix, Disney+Hotstar and Prime Video, so don’t worry about missing out on any of these highly-anticipated shows.
So, without further ado, let’s dive into our list of new and upcoming shows that you should keep an eye out for.
Raised by Wolves
Ridley Scott makes his television directorial debut with the highly mysterious and gorgeous looking Raised by Wolves. A sci-fi extravaganza, the first trailer for the show gives us a glimpse at the main plot of the series. Raised by Wolves follows the lives of a group of human children who are being raised by two androids on an alien planet. Humanity has been destroyed in a horrific and tragic war and all that’s left are these children. The show looks fantastic and given Ridley’s track record, even if the show has a few narrative issues, you can be assured that it’ll damn good doing it. The show premiers on HBO MAX on September 3 and should be streaming on Disney+Hotstar as well.
Lovecraft Country
With the first episode premiering on Sunday, August 16, Lovecraft Country is a show that any horror/sci-fi fan should definitely check out. An HBO production, Lovecraft Country is based on the book of the same name and sees sci-fi author Atticus Finch unravelling the mystery of his heritage all while fending off Lovecraftian beasts and the threat of racism in the 60s. The first episode had us on the edge of our seats, and as you would expect, has the polish and quality of HBO’s productions. The show is currently streaming on Disney+Hotstar with a new episode premiering every Sunday.
Warrior Season 2
From the guys who worked on the excellent Banshee, comes Warrior. Based on the writings and teachings of Bruce Lee, Warrior follows the path of a young Chinese man who has travelled to San Francisco in the 1920s to look for his missing sister. Cue the excellent fights, deep story and very compelling characters. And, for someone who is particularly Asian, this show offers up a feast of diversity without being overbearing. The first season is streaming on Disney+Hotstar so do yourself a favour and check it out. The second season comes out on October 2.
The Boys Season 2
Originally written by Garth Ennis, The Boys is not your regular, run-of-the-mill superhero show. It’s so much more than that as it looks at superheroes as corporate entities who aren’t the noble and humble heroes we’re used to. Instead, these superheroes are rude, violent, murderous and downright nasty and it’s up to The Boys to bring them down. Starring Karl Urban as the leader of The Boys, the show doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to the violence either. So best watch this with more mature audiences. The first season is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
Falcon and the Winter Soldier
This show was supposed to be out this month, but alas, the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed the release date of Falcon and The Winter Soldier to late 2020. We don’t have a concrete date as yet, but we should be finding out more about the show in the coming weeks. The show would have seen Bucky and Sam Wilson join forces after the events of Avengers: Endgame with Captain America taking a much-deserved break from fighting villains. The Mandalorian Season 2
A return to form for the failing Star Wars franchise, The Mandalorian is basically a western pulp show disguised as a sci-fi fantasy show. The show follows the adventures of the titular Mandalorian as he makes his way through the galaxy blasting droids and rescuing Baby Yoda. One of the best shows of the year, The Mandalorian is the redemption of a franchise that has been run into the ground. If you liked old school Star Wars, you’ll have a ton of fun with The Mandalorian. The first season is out on Disney+Hotstar while the second season will hit screens in October 2020.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous
Who doesn't love the idea of Jurassic Park? The original film was a technological marvel for its time and has since gone on to become one of the most beloved movies ever. This time, we’ve got a new Netflix series that follows a group of six teenagers chosen for a once-in-a-lifetime experience at a new adventure camp on the opposite side of Isla Nublar. But when dinosaurs wreak havoc across the island, the campers are stranded and have to fight their way out using smarts and a bit of brawn. Look, this is a kids show hut it does have cool dinosaurs, which is enough for us.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond
Taking inspiration from the world of the Walking Dead rather than the main plot from the comics, this show follows different protagonists as they navigate a world that has been decimated by the zombie apocalypse. The show will be set far into the world of the Walking Dead with the two protagonists having only known the messed up world they were born into. A coming of age tale set in the Zombie apocalypse, if you will. Definitely worth checking out. The show will premier on October 4 and should stream on Disney+Hotstar.
Invincible
One of the few animated shows on the list, Invincible is based on the popular superhero comic of the same name. Written by Walking Dead scribe, Robert Kirkman, Invincible is not your typical superhero tale. It is violent, funny, heart-warming and most importantly endearing. We’re hoping the show sticks to the tone of the comics and really knocks it out of the park. There is no release date as yet, but we should be hearing more about the show in the coming months.
Foundation
Based on the critically-acclaimed Isaac Asimov series, Foundation will steam on Apple TV+. The plot of the books is just too dense to sum up into bite-sized pieces but the gist of it is essentially a bunch of rebels called the Foundation wage a thousand-year war against the Galactic Empire in hopes of saving it. The first trailer is absolutely mesmerising, and we will definitely be keeping an eye out for this. Foundation premiers sometime in 2021.
