CES 2025: QD-OLED gaming monitors push boundaries with 500Hz refresh rates

At CES 2025, the spotlight shone brightly on the latest advancements in QD-OLED technology, with leading manufacturers introducing a slew of OLED gaming monitors with the 4th generation Samsung QD-OLED panel and support for up to 500Hz refresh rate.

Benefits of QD-OLED Gaming Monitors

For the uninitiated, the Quantum Dot OLED (QD-OLED) technology significantly improves over White OLEDs that were conventionally used in large-size OLED displays. By combining the perfect blacks and infinite contrast ratios of OLED panels with the enhanced colour brightness of quantum dots, QD-OLED displays offer several advantages:

  • Superior Color Gamut and Volume: QD-OLED monitors can display a wider range of colours compared to traditional WOLED panels, resulting in more vibrant and lifelike images.
  • Better HDR: The integration of quantum dots allows QD-OLEDs to achieve higher peak brightness levels without compromising colour accuracy, ensuring higher HDR impact.
  • Improved Viewing Angles: QD-OLED technology maintains consistent image quality across a wide range of viewing angles, ensuring that colours and contrast remain stable even when viewed from the side.
  • Faster Response Times: The inherent properties of OLED technology provide rapid response times, reducing motion blur and ghosting in fast-paced gaming scenarios.
  • Reduced Risk of Burn-In: Advancements in QD-OLED panel design have addressed concerns related to image retention and burn-in, enhancing the longevity and durability of these displays.

Here are some of the interesting QD-OLED monitors that debuted at CES 2025.

Dell’s 32-inch 4K QD-OLED Monitor with Spatial Audio

Dell has introduced a 32-inch 4K QD-OLED monitor designed not just for gamers but also for creative professionals and media enthusiasts. This monitor blends the vibrant colour reproduction of QD-OLED with a 120Hz refresh rate and includes a 90W power delivery port. It features 5 x 5W speakers paired with sensors that track head movements, directing beamforming audio to each ear while cancelling sound to the opposite ear, delivering an immersive 3D audio experience.

MSI 272QR and Gigabyte FO27Q5P with Display Port 2.1

Both of these monitors boast a 27-inch QD-OLED panel with a staggering 500Hz refresh rate, ensuring ultra-smooth visuals for competitive gamers. These monitors are among the first to feature DisplayPort 2.1a, offering up to 80Gbps bandwidth, which facilitates native, lossless 2K resolution at 500Hz without the need for compression. These monitors have been certified for ClearMR 21000 motion resolution, which is the highest tier in Vesa’s certification. Both of them also brandish DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification.

The DisplayPort 2.1a UHBR20 should ensure seamless compatibility with next-generation GPUs, delivering uncompressed video signals for professional applications and high-performance gaming.
