Catch Dragons, not Pokemon with Disney and Google’s new AR game
Disney has created this new Augmented Reality game to promote its upcoming remake of the Pete’s Dragon movie.
When it comes to Virtual and Augmented Reality, we have seen many companies, tech or not tech, use the platforms for promoting their products and services. Remember all the VR smartphone launches this year? Now, keeping with this trend of technology assisted promotions, Disney has joined forces with Google to create an all new AR game called Dragon Spotting.
So if you are tired of walking around and playing Pokemon Go, the Disney game is available in the form of a special promotional website on Android and iOS. It was created in an effort to promote the entertainment house’s upcoming remake of the 1977 film, Pete’s Dragon. Dragon Spotting allows users to hunt for Elliot the dragon, by identifying daily objects through their smartphone’s camera. The game will direct players to point their camera at a particular object, such as a sofa. On doing so, the game’s in-built machine learning capabilities kick in, identifying the object correctly and eventually revealing Elliot. Players can then share images of how and where they found the dragon on their Facebook, Twitter accounts.
So, what is Google’s contribution in the game? Well, it was built using Google’s latest Cloud Vision API, which uses machine learning to identify objects accurately. Developers also use Cloud Vision API for image labeling, face and landmark detection, optical character recognition (OCR), and tagging of explicit content.
