The next version of Bluetooth will be released in the next few days, and will “double the range and quadruple the speed of low energy Bluetooth transmissions.”
The new version of Bluetooth is all set for a June 16 release. As per a post by Mark Powell, Executive Director, Bluetooth Special Interest Group, the next version will be called Bluetooth 5.
Announcing the development, Powell wrote, “Veterans of the SIG will note that with this name we have dropped reference to both the version and point number in our marketing messaging. Our new naming approach is focused on simplifying our marketing, communicating user benefits more effectively and making it easier to signal significant technology updates to the market.“
So what will Bluetooth 5 bring? Well, for starters, Powell writes that we can expect “double the range and quadruple the speed of low energy Bluetooth transmissions.” This would definitely get a majour upgrade to Bluetooth audio transmission. Wireless audio is decent, but still not upto the mark in terms of quality. With higher speeds, this might change.
Powell also wrote about new functionality being added to the connectivity tool. Bluetooth 5 will now also assist in “connectionless services like location-relevant information and navigation. By adding significantly more capacity to advertising transmissions, Bluetooth 5 will further propel the adoption and deployment of beacons and location-based services to users around the world.”
While we now know about the upgrades made in the upcoming version of Bluetooth, there is still no information on devices that will sport the next standard. But, seeing the timeline of its release, we can expect it to feature in upcoming flagship smartphones like the iPhone 7 and Galaxy Note 7, set to launch later this year.
