Now that you have seen the winners and know where to watch the films that won Oscar, let’s get on to the other headline-grabbing incident of the night.
This year’s host was Chris Rock and the Winner of Best Actor Award was Will Smith for his character in the sports drama film King Richard (2021). However more than Mr. Rock’s witty bits or Mr. Smith’s speech, the highlight of the show for many would be Will Smith slapping Chris Rock over a joke.
Yes, you read it right. Chris Rock got slapped by Will Smith for making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith (Will Smith’s wife). While presenting the Oscar for Best Documentary, Mr. Rock joked about Pinkett Smith’s cropped hair appearance to Demi Moore’s look in G.I. Jane (1997) and remarked that Ms. Smith must be getting ready for the sequel. This was followed by Will Smith getting on the stage and slapping Chris Rock, leaving the whole Dolby Theatre in stunned silence.

Upon returning to his seat alongside his wife, Will was seen shouting, "Keep my wife's name out of your f*****g mouth," to Chris. This was of course bleeped on the live TV broadcast.
Later while giving his acceptance speech for winning the best actor award, Will Smith apologized to the Academy. He said, “I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I'm not crying for winning an award. It's not about winning an award for me. It's about being able to shine a light on all of the people. Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. Love will make you do crazy things. I'm being called on in my life to love people and protect people and be a river to my people. I know to do what we do, you got to be able to take abuse. You got to be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you got to be able to have people disrespecting you. And you got to smile and you got to pretend like that's okay.”
Meanwhile, it’s routine for comics to make jokes about anything and everything related to the Award shows including folks in the audience. So, this slap incident was one of the most shocking moments in the Academy Awards’ history and this has split social media in two. Some criticise Will while others support his action. This is how some popular celebs on Twitter reacted to the slap:
