This year’s host was Chris Rock and the Winner of Best Actor Award was Will Smith for his character in the sports drama film King Richard (2021). However more than Mr. Rock’s witty bits or Mr. Smith’s speech, the highlight of the show for many would be Will Smith slapping Chris Rock over a joke.

Yes, you read it right. Chris Rock got slapped by Will Smith for making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith (Will Smith’s wife). While presenting the Oscar for Best Documentary, Mr. Rock joked about Pinkett Smith’s cropped hair appearance to Demi Moore’s look in G.I. Jane (1997) and remarked that Ms. Smith must be getting ready for the sequel. This was followed by Will Smith getting on the stage and slapping Chris Rock, leaving the whole Dolby Theatre in stunned silence.

Upon returning to his seat alongside his wife, Will was seen shouting, "Keep my wife's name out of your f*****g mouth," to Chris. This was of course bleeped on the live TV broadcast.

Later while giving his acceptance speech for winning the best actor award, Will Smith apologized to the Academy. He said, “I want to apologize to the Academy.
