18 upcoming geeky movies in 2019

Updated on 03-Jun-2020

We’re halfway through 2019 already, however, there are still a fair number of geeky films that are slated to release this year. Even though we have blazed through highly-anticipated movies like Avengers: End Game, Captain Marvel and John Wick: Chapter 3 in the first half of the year, we still need to gear up and prepare to watch an array of long-awaited sequels, reboots and all-new movies in the second half of 2019 as well. So, geeks assemble!

X-Men: Dark Phoenix – June 7

Whether or not this film would actually be released was uncertain in light of Disney’s acquisition of Fox, however, now that we know it is released on June 7, we hope that it doesn’t disappoint, especially after witnessing the mess X-Men: Apocalypse was. The trailer, nevertheless, looks quite promising and Sophie Turner as Jean Grey seems to be a good fit.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 – June 7

Oh boy! We cannot wait to see all the weird stuff these adorable bunch of pets do when hoomans are not around again. The first movie was highly profitable and much-loved amongst children (and many adults). Max, the protagonist doggo, will be voiced by Patton Oswalt instead of Louis C.K. this time around.

Men in Black International – June 14

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) teaming up again? Oh, yes. Except that, this time the duo aren’t fighting a powerful Norse Goddess but they are taking up arms against aliens who have found their way to Earth. Lian Neeson joins them in their endeavours, more like supervises, since he is now the head of the UK branch of MIB.

Toy Story 4 – June 21

Despite the seemingly perfect ending Toy Story 3 could have been for the franchise, we were still elevated when the fourth instalment was announced. Let’s face it, we would watch Woody, Buzz and all the toys go on possibly a million more adventures with no complaints.

Annabelle Comes Home – July 3

We’re admitting it, we got quite spooked when we watch this trailer. The ugly doll that has been terrorising many since the very first instalment of the Conjuring series is making another appearance in a dedicated sequel – Annabelle Comes Home. It stars both Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) Warren from the original movie as well.

Spider-Man: Far From Home – July 5

Okay, Spider-Man: Far From Home, we forgive you for being the biggest spoiler for Avengers: End Game (the fact that Peter Parker will be revived somehow). This film is one of the most exciting releases in the latter half of 2019, featuring Tom Holland as the adorkable Spider-Man and Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio.

The Lion King – July 19

Watching the trailer, either fills you with anticipation or nostalgia. More nostalgia for the people who have watched the much-loved original version of this film which released way back in 1994. The live-action remake looks absolutely stunning in the trailer and has us crooning away ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ all over again.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – July 26

Three names. Quentin Tarantino, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. This should be enough to have you scurrying to the theatre near you to watch this film. However, we’ll give you more. This period piece tells the story of an actor and his stunt double trying to make it big in Hollywood just as the Charles Manson Murders are taking place.

Hobbs and Shaw – August 2

Behold the very first spin-off of the Fast and Furious universe. Hobbs and Shaw, featuring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Jason Statham will see the popular characters from the franchise attempting to pull off a new heist. The film is directed by a former stunt coordinator, David Leitch, so the action and stunts, in the very least, should be good.

The New Mutants – August 2

This chapter of the X-Men franchise delves into the core issue of the comics and other films – the persecution of mutants by humans. The film will supposedly be more edgy and dark and has rounded up a stellar young cast to accomplish this. Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy and Charlie Heaton are set to play the new generation of mutants.

It: Chapter Two – September 6

This sequel to 2017’s It takes place 27 years after the first film’s events and features stars like Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and Bill Halder, playing the adult-versions of the kids from the first chapter. Pennywise will return to terrorise these hardened adults after all these years in all his shape-shifting glory.

Joker – October 4

Many fans from different age groups argue that Jack Nicholson or Heath Ledger’s rendition of Joker cannot be topped. From the looks of the trailer, Joaquin Phoenix may very well be on the path of matching up or beating those solid performances. In the Joker (2019), the titular villain starts off as a failed stand-up comedian who ultimately turns to a sordid life of crime and chaos.

The Addams Family – October 11

This is a reboot of the big screen adaptation of the ‘60s sitcom which was based on an original comic strip series. The ‘90s kids will also fondly remember watching The Addams Family on Cartoon Network. They’re creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky and we cannot wait to see if the film matches up to the calibre of the TV series.

Terminator: Dark Fate – October 25

All those “I’ll be back”s have truly paid off. Arnold Schwarzenegger is back as Terminator (Model 101) in this 2019 Terminator reboot. The film will start off where the first two instalments of the franchise left off, with all the other films being explained as alternate timelines. Linda Hamilton will also reprise her role as Sarah Connor.

Sonic the Hedgehog – February 14, 2020 (delayed)

This live-action adaptation of Sega’s popular console game, Sonic the Hedgehog, has already had fans on the fence about Sonic’s design in the film, especially his eerie human-like teeth. However, the director has stated that design changes are “going to happen” which makes us slightly hopeful that the movie won’t be yet another victim of the video game adaptation curse.

Update: The filmmaker recently announced that the film is delayed to February 14, 2020, to "make Sonic just right".

Frozen 2 – November 22

We’re definitely not letting this one go. (See what we did there?) Frozen 2 will see the return of Anna, Elsa and Kristoff and will primarily focus around the evolution of Elsa’s character. The actors also teased that the sequel will not be a conventional one and it is “a story that needs to be told”. Well, colour us intrigued.

Jumanji 3 – December 13

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) was a surprisingly entertaining film with great characterisation. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillian and Jack Black will reprise their roles in this sequel and we are definitely looking forward to watching it and cracking up all over again. Unfortunately, the actual title and trailer of the film still haven’t been released.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – December 20

J. J. Abrams will wrap up the Skywalker saga in the 9th instalment – The Rise of Skywalker. We hope it does justice to the saga, which has seen its fair share of ups and downs over the decades. Also, the film allocates a significant amount of screentime to Princess Leia played by the late Carrie Fisher by utilising unused footage from earlier films. We’re curious to see how this pans out.
