Announcing Intel IoT Developer Kit support for Intel IoT Gateways!

The path to app development will soon be easier than ever, with a faster migration to real-world commercial solutions.

In the coming weeks the Intel® IoT Developer kit will add support for Intel® IoT Gateways. In addition, this new Intel® IoT Developer Kit will include the new Intel® System Studio IoT Edition for C/C++/Java development, new features in Intel® XDK IoT Edition to support Intel® IoT Gateways and sensor library support for commercial grade sensors and actuators.

The upcoming release will have a trio of new enhancements to the Intel® IoT Developer Kit that are evidence of Intel’s ongoing commitment to the Internet of Things (IoT).  The first includes support for IoT gateways that help provide a seamless developer experience from prototype to production.

The second is the release of a TinyB (Tiny Bluetooth) Library that allows developers to connect to and interact with Bluetooth LE devices using simple C++ and Java APIs.  And the third is an expansion of the UPM sensor library—including, for the first time, an array of industrial sensors.

(1) Intel IoT Gateways To Faster And Easier Development

The first of Intel’s new gateway announcements pertains to the Intel® System Studio IoT Edition, which supports C++ and Java development on Intel IoT gateways running the Wind River operating system.  We’re also unveiling new features and support in the Intel® XDK IoT Edition for Javascript app development, as well as HTML5 companion app development.

Included are a Sensor Explorer capability that extends sensor support along with Moon Island support—in essence, the larger offering that encompasses the new gateway support for Wind River Linux.

The result is a consistent and great developer experience with both Intel System Studio IoT Edition andIntel XDK IoT Edition.  And above all, a really easy way to get all the hardware and software tools you need to start developing for Intel Galileo, Intel Edison boards and Intel IoT Gateways.

(2) Connect to Bluetooth LE Devices

The kit’s new TinyB Library uses BlueZ via D-Bus to interact with the underlying Bluetooth stack.  You can use it on IoT platforms such as Intel Edison to collect data from remote Bluetooth LE sensors such as the TI Sensortag.

You now have access to:

  • Source code of the TinyB project: https://github.com/intel-iot-devkit/
  • Code examples for using TinyB in C++ and Java:  https://github.com/intel-iot-devkit/tinyb/tree/master/examples
  • C++ API documentation and Java API documentation for TinyB
  • Guide for creating Java for Bluetooth LE applications using TinyB

(3) New Sensors For The Factory Floor

The third new enhancement to the Intel® IoT Developer Kit includes an expansion of the UPM library, which now supports more than 160 sensors.  In addition, we’ve just released support for more than two dozen industrial sensors, ideal for factory floor application development.  Here’s a list of other protocols and device support provided by the new release:

  • Protocols such as ModBus and BACNet
  • Radio/wireless modules
  • XBee socket devices
  • ZigBee, WiFi, WiFly
  • LoRa—the SX1276 chip
  • ZWave—USB Controllers
  • ISM (Industrial, Scientific & Medical) Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) at 434 and 915 MHz

The Faster, Easier Path To Application Development

From new gateways to Bluetooth to expanded sensor offerings, the latest enhancements to the Intel® IoT Developer Kit releasing in the coming weeks gives you tools—for free—that were never before available, accelerating your development efforts and enabling you to turn your apps into real-world commercial solutions.

We’ll be providing demos of these new enhancements at the Embedded World conference in Germany, running from February 23-25.   Please join us there if you can.
