The Northman is an epic historical action thriller film which is based on the legend of Amleth. The story follows Amleth, a Viking prince who sets out on a quest to avenge the murder of his father. The movie is heavily influenced by Norse mythology. Set in AD 895, King Aurvandill returns to the island of Hrafnsey after his overseas conquests and reunites with his wife, Queen Gudrún, and his heir, Prince Amleth. The father and son participate in a ceremony overseen by Aurvandill's jester, Heimir for Amleth’s succession to the throne.
However, his father Aurvandill is beheaded by Amleth's uncle Fjölnir stages a palace coup and takes Queen Gudrún. Amleth narrowly escapes Fjölnir's assassins and flees by boat, swearing vengeance for his father’s death. While finding a way to get his revenge he meets Olga- a Slavic sorceress, and they fall in love. Amleth and Fjölnir engage in a fierce duel where Amleth is fatally stabbed and Fjölnir is beheaded. As Amleth lies dying, he has a vision of Olga embracing their children- saying it’s time to let go. In the final scene, a Valkyrie carries Amleth through the gates of Valhöll (Valhalla).
