Popular Dialogues

  • It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.

  • He’s the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we’ll hunt him...Because he can take it...Because he’s not our hero. He’s a silent guardian, a watchful protector...A dark knight.

  • This city just showed you that it’s full of people ready to believe in good.

  • Endure, Master Wayne. Take it. They’ll hate you for it, but that’s the point of Batman, he can be the outcast. He can make the choice that no one else can make, the right choice.

  • Maybe that’s what batman is about. Not winning...but failing, and getting back up. Knowing he’ll fail, fail a thousand times, but still won’t give up.

  • The night is darkest just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming.

  • What were you trying to prove? That deep down, everyone’s as ugly as you? You’re alone!

  • If I have to have a past, then I prefer it to be multiple choice.

Trivia

1. Robert Pattinson appeared very early on in Matt Reeves head as he was writing the screenplay. Pattinson was Reeves top choice to play Batman because he was "always that version of what I saw in the page. I think of Bruce Wayne as this recluse rockstar in a decaying manor. There's this part of me that so saw Rob (Pattinson) as that & I had no idea that he would be interested in playing the role at all. I thought what if Rob doesn't want to play Batman? This would be a disaster". But Pattinson had been chasing the role of Batman for much longer than anyone knew. Pattinson: "I've had Batman in my mind for a while. It's such an absurd thing to say." When Reeves finally finished the script, they had a meeting in LA. Pattinson: "I had to kind of try to imagine what he'd written, and I hadn't even read the script. I'd come with this pad full of notes."
2. Matt Reeves cites the Batman comics "Batman: Ego", "Batman: The Long Halloween" and "Batman: Year One" as influences on the film.
3. The Batmobile in this film is a customized muscle car. This draws influence from the 1970s "Batman" comics by Neal Adams, where the Batmobile was a fairly normal-looking car that Batman drove for stealth purposes.
4. Zoë Kravitz and Robert Pattinson received the same advice from the predecessors of their respective roles (Michelle Pfeiffer and Christian Bale respectively): make sure you can go to the bathroom while in costume.
5. This is the first version of Batman to directly address the black eye makeup under the cowl. In previous versions on film, the makeup just disappeared when Bruce took his mask off.
6. Robert Pattinson's screentest (before he was officially cast) took place while he was in his first few days of shooting Tenet (2020) in Los Angeles in May 2019. Pattinson had to lie to Christopher Nolan about it, but Nolan, who was no stranger to Batman and Warner Bros., immediately figured it out. Pattinson: "It's funny because Chris (Nolan) is so secretive about everything to do with his movies. And then I had to be really secretive about Batman stuff. So I had to lie to Chris about having to go for a screen test. I said I had a family emergency. And as soon as I said it's a family emergency, he said: 'You're doing the Batman audition, aren't you?'"
7. The movie's working title was 'Vengeance'.
8. Robert Pattinson about why he wanted the role: "I felt a connection to it, I don't know why. I just really wanted it. [The role of the Batman has] power. Everyone is attracted to it. It's an unidentifiable thing."
9. Robert Pattinson described his Batman as flawed, unlike traditional comic book characters: "He's a complicated character. I don't think I could ever play a real hero - there's always got to be something a little bit wrong. His morality is a little bit off. He's not the golden boy, unlike almost every other comic-book character."
10. Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz both worked out with personal trainer David Higgins months before and during the whole shoot.
11. It is rumoured that Matt Reeves eyed Mahershala Ali for the role of Commissioner Gordon at one point.
12. When Ben Affleck was set to star and direct, the villain of the film would have been Deathstroke played by Joe Manganiello and the screenplay would have prominently featured Arkham Asylum. According to Manganiello, Barbara Gordon/Batgirl had also been slated to make an appearance in the film's climax.
13. Matt Reeves stated that his version of the Riddler was partly inspired by the infamous serial killer Zodiac who operated in California in the late 1960s.
14. Director Matt Reeves cites the 1970s films Chinatown (1974) and Klute (1971) as influences.
15. Robert Pattinson auditioned for The Batman using Val Kilmer's original Batsuit from Batman Forever (1995).
16. Matt Reeves cites the work of Batman artist Francesco Francavilla as an influence on the film's design (film-noirish and distinctly low-tech).
17. Director Matt Reeves stated that while writing the screenplay, he listened to the track "Thank God for the Rain" from the soundtrack of Taxi Driver (1976) on loop.
18. Matt Reeves cites the Batman comic "Ego" as an influence on Batman's portrayal in this film: "I wanted to get into the mindset of the character and I wanted to think of the psychology for me. I think one of the cool deep-dive ones was Darwyn Cooke's Ego. He's confronting the beast that is Batman, and there's a kind of duality. There's a lot in the story about Bruce Wayne confronting the shadow side of himself that's Batman and the degree to which you have self knowledge. There's psychological union, where Batman is broken and he does things for reasons he knows and reasons he doesn't know yet."
19. Matt Reeves describes this version of Batman as a mix between detective story, action movie and psychological thriller.
20. After Matt Reeves officially stepped in as director on Feb 23, 2017, he dropped the movie due to contractual disagreements a few weeks later. Fortunately, he returned after both parties talked through it again.
21. Filming began in January 2020 in London and was put on hold on March 25, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After a 5 month hiatus, shooting began again in late August 2020. After three days, filming was again suspended on September 3, after Robert Pattinson allegedly tested positive for COVID-19. After Pattinson was cleared to return, shooting resumed on September 17, 2020 and finally wrapped on March 12, 2021 -- 14 months after principal photography initially began.
22. Colin Farrell wears makeup and a fat suit for his role of the Penguin. The facial prosthetics were comprised of six distinct pieces. In order to ensure there were no visible seams, crew members would shine harsh flashlights in his face before approving him to go to set.
23. Colin Farrell (Oswald Cobblepot / The Penguin) had previously been Wolfgang Petersen's choice to play Batman in his proposed Batman vs Superman film in 2002, with Jude Law playing Superman.
24. A scene in this movie and the "Hit me!" scene in The Dark Knight (2008) were shot in the same street in Chicago; in S LaSalle Street/W Marble Place facing the Chicago Board of Trade Building.
25. Zoë Kravitz is the third African American actress to play Catwoman in live action after Eartha Kitt in Batman (1966) and Halle Berry in Catwoman (2004).
26. Robert Pattinson is the third British actor to play Batman after Christian Bale (The Dark Knight Trilogy) and Iain Glen (Titans (2018)).
27. Matt Reeves stated that in the audition, he knew Pattinson was gonna be his Batman the moment he put on the black eye makeup.
28. Robert Pattinson revealed while screen testing for the role, he sneakily took a selfie in the batsuit as a memento "just in case it didn't work out."
29. This will be the first live-action Batman film to feature the Riddler since Batman Forever (1995) and the first live-action Batman film to feature the Penguin since Batman Returns (1992).
30. With this film, composer Michael Giacchino joins Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe as composers who have composed for both the Batman franchise and the Mission: Impossible franchise. All of these composers, with the exception of Balfe, have composed Spider-Man films as well.
31. Denis Villeneuve, George Miller, Ridley Scott, Matt Ross and Fede Alvarez were considered to be the film's director before Matt Reeves was hired.
32. It was confirmed early on that Robert Pattinson signed a three picture deal, meaning this is to be the first film of a new Batman trilogy. This will be the second Batman trilogy ever, following Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.
33. Robert Pattinson dyed his hair dark brunette for this role. His natural hair color is dark blond/light brown.
34. In the original comics, The Riddler's real name is Edward Nygma and in the New 52 storyline, his surname is changed from Edward Nygma to Nashton. The film's version will be Edward Nashton.
35. The first solo Batman film to be shot on digital.
