Trivia

1. Aamir Khan learned how to swim for the film, which took him about four months.
2. Nawazuddin Siddiqui's character is called Tehmur and walks with a limp, a reference to Timur the Lame (also known as Tamerlane and Tamburlaine), a prominent Mongol conqueror of the late 14th Century and an ancestor to the Mughal Dynasty who would rule India from the 16th to the 18th century.
3. The idea for the film came from an unexplained event witnessed by co-writer Zoya Akhtar and a group of her friends as they were driving down a deserted road one night and which haunts them to this day.
4. Aamir Khan and director Reema Kagti decided on having a mustache to give his policeman character a darker feel. However, Khan grew it so long that it was against policy regulations and it was only after being informed about this from a real police officer, that he let the hair and make-up crew trim it.
5. Saif Ali Khan, Salman Khan, and Shah Rukh Khan all turned down the lead role before the filmmakers' first choice, Aamir Khan, took the part.
6. A rumor during production claimed that the ending was similar to Kahaani (2012) and thus had to be re-shot. This turned out to be nothing but idle gossip.
7. The film is somewhat reminiscent of the types of films made by director Raj Khosla in the sixties. Coincidentally, Aamir Khan now resides in Khosla's former apartment.
8. Though set almost entirely in Mumbai, and extensively shot there on location, several key scenes were filmed in Puducherry, over 1000km away on the other side of India, and one underwater scene was shot at London's Pinewood Studios.
9. The script's original title was too revealing, so a new one was needed for the film. The three producers and two writers had trouble settling on a title they could all agree on. Thus plenty of titles were in consideration before Talaash was chosen.
10. Omi Vaidya was cast to play a villain but eventually dropped out.
11. Kareena Kapoor also starred as a lead in the entirely unrelated Talaash: The Hunt Begins... (2003) nine years earlier.
12. The film was earlier titled Dhuaan and then Act of Murder then Zakhmi.
13. Nawazuddin Siddiqui has worked with Aamir Khan twice, in Sarfarosh (1999) and Talaash (2012). Sarfarosh was Nawazuddin's debut film.
14. While this movie is brilliantly set in Mumbai and its dark underbelly, it is inspired heavily by the movie Don't Look Now (1973), set in Venice, Italy.
15. The climax of the film was its highlight which gave the film more positive reviews.
16. The film teamed up with Windows 8 for its marketing.
