2: 54Sonic: I don't know how you got back, but you made a big mistake coming here.
Dr. Ivo Robotnik: Au contraire mon frère. The mistake was thinking you'd won.
Sonic: I get it.
Dr. Ivo Robotnik: I don't think you do. But you're about to. And so will that idiot sheriff and his wife.
1.The film's working title is "Emerald Hill", after the first stage of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992).
2.The coffee shop is named the Mean Bean, after the Sonic game Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (1993).
3.Jason Momoa was originally offered the voice role of Knuckles, but had to turn it down due to schedule conflicts with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023).
4.This is Idris Elba's fourth voice-over role, after Zootopia (2016), The Jungle Book (2016) and Finding Dory (2016), All three features were Disney films, making this his first non-Disney voice role, in addition to being his second time doing voice over work in a live-action film.
5.A small hologram of Sonic is shown, he is standing still and tapping his foot. This is what would happen in the original Sonic games if you didn't control him and left him standing.
6.Tails flying a red aeroplane in the movie is similar to the one he flies in the games, even with Sonic standing on top of the wings.
7.There is a shot where we see Sonic coming inside the Master Emerald temple, sliding down on water. They used the same layout from Sonic 1 "Labyrinth Zone Act 3" where Sonic is constantly sliding down on water until he finds the switch to break the loop and unvail an secret exit.
8.Near the end of the movie Agent Stone holds up an instruction manual similar to that found in Sega game boxes like the Mega Drive, it can also be seen that the Sega logo is visible.
9.When Sonic is left home alone he plays music and slides into one scene at a doorway similar to Tom Cruise in Risky Business (1983)
10.Sonic attempting to be a hero, leaping off a city building while striking a relaxed pose in midair and facing the camera is remarkably similar to Miles Morales at the end of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
11.The film opens with Stars in the Sky, which plays for the animated credits.
12.The way Sonic saves Knuckles from drowning, is very identical shot for shot to Lethal Weapon 4 (1998) when Murtaugh saves Riggs from drowning both characters are pinned under a stone concrete and they both go on three.
13.The scene where Sonic is spinning around like a tasmanian devil is a nod to The Mask (1994),which also starred Jim Carrey.
14.John Cena and Dwayne Johnson were considered for the voice of Knuckles before Idris Elba was chosen. Elba and Cena were both in The Suicide Squad (2021) as Bloodsport and Peacemaker.
15.In the film, the 7 Chaos Emeralds are used to create the Master Emerald and are contained within it while in the video games, the Chaos Emeralds and Master Emerald exist independently of each other.
16.When robotnik harnesses the powers of the Master Emerald he has green lightning powers and his suit has green in it, this is the fourth movie that Jim Carrey has done that is associated with the color green after playing the green characters in The Mask (1994) The Riddler in Batman Forever (1995), and the Grinch in How the Grinch stole Christmas (2000). Also earlier in the film, while taunting Sonic, Robotnik shrieks "And Your Little Dog, Too! (" eferring to Ozzy) in the voice of the Wicked Witch of the West (also a green character) from Wizard of Oz (1939).
17.In the first movie,it was released on Valentine's Day, for the sequels release it was April Fools Day (depending on whether your from the UK or Ireland).
18.The music video, "Speed Life" shows Knuckles using the Spin Attack at the end of the video, which references that, especially in the older games, many playable Sonic characters can use most of Sonic's moves.
19.This CKN interview shows that Knuckles still likes grapes like his mainline counterpart.
20.In one scene, Sonic is on the sofa with the dog and he says a line in a 'riff song' style. This is a nod to the character Ben Schwartz plays in Parks and Recreation (Jean-Ralphio Saperstein) who often awkwardly sings his dialogue in this fashion.
21.According to a recent interview, Jim Carrey announced that he is going to retire from acting meaning that Sonic 2 might be his last film.
22.Jason Mardsen and Idris Elba have both been in Marvel movies Mardsen played Cyclops in Fox's X-Men Elba played Heimdall in the MCU. Interestingly Cyclops is power is shooting red optic blasts from his visor, Knuckles is a red echidna.
23.The giant mech Robotnik creates with the Master Emerald is based on both the Death Egg Robot and the Giant Eggman Robo, which were the final boss of the Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 games respectively. The latter was also powered by the Master Emerald similarly to the robot in the film.
24.The main plot of the first movie started when Sonic played baseball by himself and got upset because he was all alone. This movie ends with Sonic having fun playing a game of baseball with his friends and family.
25.Unlike in the video game series, Robotnik uses Chaos energy directly without hooking it up to a machine as a power source, becoming a very powerful Evil Sorcerer capable of floating, shooting bolts of energy and conjuring up tornadoes.
26.Mirroring the first movie, Sonic unlocks a hidden power while near death. This time, he unintentionally uses the Chaos Emeralds to transform into Super Sonic.
27.When Tom calls Sonic out over destroying an entire city block in Seattle, Sonic quips that it was already messed up, quoting Chris Tucker's character from Rush Hour.
28.Tom describes Sonic's habit of moonlighting as a vigilante as "pretending to be Batman." A promotional tweet for the film took the reference further by paraphrasing the Riddler in Batman Forever, which doubles both as an Actor Allusion for Jim Carrey (who played Riddler in that film) and a nod to The Batman, which began preview screenings the day the tweet was posted and also features the Riddler. A second tweet featured another Forever quote and a poster parodying the final shot of Batman (1989).
29.Agent Stone's coffee shop is named the Mean Bean, a reference to Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.
30.Agent Stone refers to Knuckles as a "porcupine" possibly in reference to his theme from Sonic Adventure, Unknown from M.E., doing the same.
31.Knuckles smashes through a truck of Splash Hills Spring Water.
32.Sonic and Tails flying towards Robotnik's flying fortress is clearly a reference to Sky Chase Zone from both Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic Adventure.
33.As Sonic calls for Tom's help, Tom's ringtone is Green Hill Zone
33.Sonic can be seen sporting a Mohawk at one point, bringing to mind the American redesign where his quills were put in a row to match a Mohawk.
34.Part of Sonic and Knuckles' fight at the temple has Sonic non-chalantly dodge Knuckles' Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs which is similar to their fight in Sonic X.
35.The yellow backpack Tails' wears is similar to one his Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) counterpart wore in the episode Drood Henge.
