Kalki 2898 AD is an Indian epic science-fiction dystopian film released on 27 June 2024. Directed by Nag Ashwin and produced by C. Aswani Dutt, the film is based on Hindu scriptures and unfolds in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2898 AD. The narrative is set against the backdrop of both ancient Indian mythology and a distant futuristic dystopian society in the mystical city of Kasi (present-day Varanasi). The story spans millennia, from the epic events of the Mahabharata in 3102 BCE to the distant year of 2898 AD. It centers around Kalki, the tenth and final incarnation of the Hindu deity Lord Vishnu, who is prophesied to be the harbinger of the end of the Kali Yuga, a pivotal epoch in Vaishnava cosmology. Kalki serves as a catalyst for profound societal and existential shifts that transcend the boundaries of time and space. The film is noted for its grand scale, with a budget of ₹600 crore, making it the most expensive Indian film to date. It was released worldwide in various formats including IMAX and 3D. The plot weaves together ancient Indian mythology and a dystopian society, chronicling a battle against oppressive forces and the quest to protect the unborn child Kalki.
