Cupertino-based tech giant Apple has reportedly terminated over 185 employees from its headquarters. This termination comes after a monetary fraud scandal was unveiled in which these employees were involved. The Apple employees were exploiting Apple’s corporate social responsibility program. Under this initiative, Apple would match the employee donations to nonprofit organisations, which would mean that the nonprofits would get double the amount. However, employees would collaborate with the nonprofits who would return their money and keep the money coming from Apple. Six employees have already been arrested for being associated with this scam.

Media reports suggest that many of the 185 employees who have been fired from Apple were Indians. They allegedly misused Telugu charity organisations in the United States for their monetary benefits. According to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, Apple was defrauded of approximately $152,000 (Rs 1.26 crore approx) over three years.

Employees reportedly made fake donations to nonprofits, which were matched by Apple. These nonprofits included the American Chinese International Cultural Exchange (ACICE) and Hop4Kids. They would collaborate with the employees and return back their original contributions while retaining Apple’s matching contributions. The leader of this scam was, Siu Kei (Alex) Kwan, who served as CEO of Hop4Kids and accountant for ACICE, as per reports.

The six individuals charged include Kwan, Yathei (Hayson) Yuen, Yat C (Sunny) Ng, Wentao (Victor) Li, Lichao Ni, and Zheng Chang. Now they are facing accusations of falsifying donations and using these fictitious transactions for tax write-offs This violates corporate policies and U.S. tax laws. Reports also revealed that many fired employees reportedly collaborated with nonprofit organisations linked to the Indian community as well.

Apple is yet to release an official statement on the matter so that’s all we know so far.
