For the past couple of days, everytime I scroll on Instagram, I find a couple reels where an AC unit has caught fire. As the temperature is rising at an alarming rate, almost reaching 50 degree celsius, the cases of AC blast are also increasing. But why are these ACs, which are supposed to help us deal with the summers better, catching fire? Let’s find out why and what can you do to prevent such a hazard at your home.
Possible reasons behind AC Blast
- Overuse: Since the temperatures are rising so much, we are overly using our ACs, pushing their limits. This causes overheating of the AC units which in turn puts pressure on the compressor. And then this eventually leads to a fire.
- Gas leaks: So, the ACs have refrigerant gas that are responsible for cooling. In a lot of cases AC gags can leak. If there’s a gas leak in your AC then it will not provide optimal cooling, which will put more load on the AC. This will then lead to overheating of the AC unit which can cause fire.
- Voltage Fluctuation: Another major reason why ACs can catch fire is voltage fluctuation. If your area experiences frequent voltage fluctuations, then that can damage the compressor of your AC and other electrical components. This can cause an overload on the AC which can lead to overheating and eventually a fire.

How to prevent your AC from catching fire?
- It is important that you give your ACs frequent breaks every 2-3 hours. It is important for it to cool down and to prevent overheating.
- It is also important that you get regular maintenance and checks done to make sure there are no leaks or blockages.
- If your area experiences regular voltage fluctuations, then you can get a voltage stabiliser installed.
- It is also important that you make sure that your AC unit is connected to a dedicated electrical circuit to avoid overloading.
- Make sure that your AC is installed properly by a professional.
